Virgil D. Hastings, age 88 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his family.
Virgil Dee Hastings was born on October 20, 1934 on a farm near Osceola, NE; the son of DeWitt L. “Dee” and Dorothy R. (Bazer) Hastings. He attended school and graduated from Silver Creek High School, Silver Creek, NE with the Class of 1952.
He entered the United States Army on September 22, 1954 and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on September 6, 1956.
On October 19, 1957, Virgil was united in marriage to Iona Mae Bernt in Osceola, NE and to this union four daughters were born: Cindy, Debbie, Vicki and Sandy. Virgil began working for Standard Oil Company at the Training Station in Omaha, NE shortly after their marriage. The couple later moved to Nebraska City in 1961 and he began running the Standard Oil Station on 11th Street. He retired in 1996 and enjoyed many years of “doing what he liked to do”.
Virgil was a member of the American Legion Post 8 and a lifetime member of the Eagles.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Iona Hastings of Nebr. City; four daughters: Cindy Bell (Jeff) of Hickman, NE, Debbie Beebout (Mark) of North Platte, NE, Vicki Stoll (Fred) of Lincoln, NE and Sandy Hastings (Darrell Dixon) of Allen, TX; nine grandchildren: Paiton Bell, Corbin Bell, Ethan Bell, Jordan Beebout (Amanda), Erin Beebout, Dylan Stoll (Lisa), Griffin Stoll, Willow Shipley (Jeremy) and Jerritt Dixon and a great-granddaughter Scarlett Stoll; other family and friends.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jerry Hastings and one grandson Bryton.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with Military Honors by the Talmage American Legion Post 246.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to: National Institute of Mental Health or the UNL ASD Network (University of Nebraska Foundation).
