Verda Bennett, age 82 of Shenandoah, IA (formerly Farragut, IA) passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.
Verda Mae Elizabeth (Shelton) Bennett was born on May 27, 1942 to Ellis and Ambolene (Casey) Shelton at the former Hand Hospital in Shenandoah, IA.
Verda attended and graduated from Farragut High School in 1960. After graduation she attended Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, NE. She met and married Bobby Bennett. They had a baby boy named Bobby Jene Bennett who lived a short life, March 24 – May 21, 1962. Verda was a military wife for 20 years. Verda and Bobby lived in several countries and various locations in the United States. The couple later divorced.
Verda worked at Woolworths, Farragut School lunchroom, the Sidney Care Center and the Clarinda Hospital. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the Colorado Mountains. She liked cooking, sewing, reading, studying her Bible and counted cross stitching. She was her mother’s caregiver, and she loved her family.
She is survived by her brother Eugene Shelton (Cindy) of Farragut, IA; nieces: Chris Slauter (Reggie) of Clarinda, IA, Emily Gamel (Terry) of Tulsa, OK, Rebekah Elder (David) of Sioux City, IA and Carla Shelton of Stillwater, OK; nephew Josh Munns (Jessica) of Clarinda, IA; great niece Rachel Morton (Scott) of Clarinda, IA; great nephews: Michael and Christopher Munns, Noah, Levi and Sam Elder; great great nephew Aiden Morton; other family and friends.
In addition to her infant son, Verda was preceded in death by her parents Ellis Shelton (1997) and Ambolene Shelton (2009); brother Ellis Mack Shelton (1949) and sister Wanda Kay Munns (2009).
A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Farragut Congregational United Church of Christ in Farragut, IA. Inurnment will be held in Grange Hall Cemetery at rural Rock Port, MO at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the Farragut Congregational UCC or Grange Hall Cemetery Association.
