Tommie J. (Tom) Gess

Tommie J. “Tom” Gess, age 76 of Nebraska City, NE (formerly Lincoln, NE) passed away Sunday evening; April 30, 2023 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

He was born on May 12, 1946 in Nebraska City; the son of Ellsworth A. and Dorothy L. (Rakes) Gess.  He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1964.  During his high school years, he worked at the former Hinky Dinky Grocery Store in Nebr. City.

He attended Milford Technical School following his graduation and enrolled in the Electronics Program there.  He later attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL).   He entered the U.S. Navy on July 14, 1966 and served aboard the USS Boston during the Vietnam War.  He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1970.

After returning home from service, he began his career at the Kawasaki Plant in Lincoln where he worked as a Press Operator.  After some 40 years of employment at Kawasaki, he retired in 2011.   He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

He is survived by an aunt Linda Frerichs and an uncle Merle Rakes and wife Muriel all of Nebr. City; numerous cousins, other family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his father Ellsworth in 1999 and his mother Dorothy in 2007.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City; burial will follow in the Wyuka Cemetery with complete military honors.

The family will greet friends on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the D.A.V. (Disabled American Vets).
