Thomas J. Schreiner, age 84 of Nebraska City passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebr. City.
Tom was born on May 19, 1936 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Eugene and Rose (Karmazin) Schreiner. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from St. Bernard’s Academy (n/k/a Lourdes Central Catholic) with the Class of 1954.
On January 19, 1963, Tom was united in marriage to Joyce A. Erwin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City and to this union two children were born: Kimberly and Kent. He worked for American Meter in Nebraska City from October 18, 1954 until his retirement on September 1, 1998 after 44 years of employment there.
He was a 57 year member of the Nebraska City Volunteer Fire Department. He began with the department on February 10, 1960 and volunteered until May 10, 2017. He spent numerous hours researching the Nebraska City Fire Department history and providing support during the construction and operation of the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting.
Tom was also a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Post-retirement, he provided handyman services and assistance with the renovation of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Schreiner of Nebr. City; two children: Kimberly Schreiner of Lincoln, NE and Kent Schreiner of St. Louis, MO; two sisters Linda Lollmann of Nebr. City and Mary Sue Hibbs and husband Michael of Adel, IA; sister-in-law Judi Schreiner of Clarinda, IA; nieces and nephews: Kelly Schreiner, Kristin Lutz, Robert Schreiner, Debbie Bruggeman, Gregory Hibbs, Jeffrey Lollmann, Margaret Hibbs, and Michael Lollmann; numerous great nieces and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Schreiner; infant twin brothers James and Patrick Schreiner; brother-in-law Thomas Lollmann and nephew-in-law Patrick Lutz.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 12, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Tim Danek celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebr. City with honors conducted by the Nebraska City Volunteer Fire Department.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (2/11) evening at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. A Rosary Recitation will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Lourdes Lunchroom Development or the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting.
