Sonja Kay Nielsen, age 44 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Sonja Kay Nielsen was born on June 23, 1979 in Hamburg, IA; she was the daughter of Christine Diane Bebout. She attended school in Nebraska City, NE at the Nebraska School for the Visually Handicapped. She graduated with the Class of 2000.
Sonja participated in the Special Olympics in Swimming and Bowling winning numerous medals. She travelled by bus to many states attending camps for the visually impaired for thirty years making many friends along the way. Sonja also loved all genres of music that she could sing and dance to. One of her most memorable moments was teaching many the Macarena at her sister's wedding. When Sonja wasn't traveling or swimming she would enjoy riding her Yellow Bike around town.
She is survived by her significant other Allen Spencer of Hamburg, IA; her parents Christine and Robert Barton of Sidney, IA; a sister Shannon Burgett and husband Eric of Lewiston, NE; nephew Johnathan Burgett of Beatrice, NE; other family and many friends.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at The Center in Hamburg, IA.
Private Family Graveside Services will be held at a later date at the Redd Cemetery, rural Sidney, IA.
Memorials may be given to the family for future designation or to the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired (NCECBVI).
