“Some people only walk this earth for a short amount of time. Their departure reminds us that angels are watching over us.”
On September 7, 2022 Sarah M. (Henderson) Jones, surrounded by her family, got her wings and went to walk with the angels at the age of 74 years.
Sarah was born on October 15, 1947 to Oscar and Sylvia (Witherow) Henderson in rural Union, one of 13 siblings, Sarah was raised in rural Union and graduated from Union High school. She married Leonard Jones on March 19, 1966 in Plattsmouth, NE. Sarah had many jobs over the years including working for Paul Pickering and Mel and Sandy Bernie at the restaurant in Union. She worked at the cafe in Nehawka for her sister Elma and her brother John and she also babysat numerous children through the years. Her entire life was spent caring for others.
Sarah was the proud mother of three children, and they were proud to call her mom. She had a compassionate spirit and cared for so many throughout her life. Sarah lived in rural Union, and in Nehawka. In 2016 she moved to the Waterford at Woodbridge in Plattsmouth which she called home for six years, before moving in with her daughter for her final months.
It would be wrong to say that Sarah lost her battle because she never stopped fighting, she fought to the bitter end. No matter how sick she was, she was always so determined. When anyone else would have broken, she stayed strong, and through her we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. Though she has struggled for years, few knew the extent to which she was struggling. Her joy for life and indomitable spirit kept her pushing through the pain. She taught us what true compassion and dignity really were, always reminding us that there was a rainbow after the storm. Over the years her heart and home were always “open” to whomever may need it; a place to stay, a cup of coffee or a glass of tea on the front porch.
Sarah enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved sharing what they were involved in and the accomplishments they had made. She loved to bake Texas sheet cakes or those “oh so famous” cut out sugar cookies with her sisters. She would spend hours making jelly and cookies with Elma and Evelyn or making cupcakes with Ali. Cutting up and laughing with her little sisters Paulette & Teresa, belly laughing until they cried. She loved her brothers, something fierce. She loved a game of marbles with the grandkids. Sarah enjoyed baking and cooking - there was always a home cooked meal and more often than not there was a fresh homemade dessert for all to enjoy.
Sarah was known as Grandma Sarah by many, not only her own grandkids but nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and even some that weren't related. And what a good grandma she was, she loved with her whole heart. She was a fun-loving woman with a fiery spirit, a woman of immense love and compassion. She truly loved a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.
Sarah is survived by her children, Sam (Shelly) Jones of Union, NE, Larry (Micki) Jones of Humboldt, NE and Jennifer (Allen) Gansemer of Nehawka, NE; sisters: Paulette, Teresa and Evelyn; brothers: Joe, John, Elmer and LeRoy; grandchildren: Zach Jones, Drew (Lindsey) Jones, Josh (Alesha) Jones, Adrian (Jake) Lanum, Zane Gansemer, Kobe Gansemer, Alison Gansemer and Angela Miller; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
