Rosemary L. Spiegel, age 97 of Sidney, IA (formerly Hamburg and Riverton) passed away on September 8, 2024 at the Sidney Ambassador.
Rosemary was born on August 5, 1927 in Shenandoah, IA; the oldest child of Charles and Gladys (Prall) Simpson. She attended school in Riverton and later in Hamburg where she graduated from the Hamburg High School.
She was united in marriage to Howard I. Spiegel on her 20th birthday; August 5, 1947 at the Baptist Church in Hamburg, IA. They spent the majority of their lives in Hamburg. Howard preceded her in death on January 6, 2016.
Rosie-as she was lovingly known-began her career in banking shortly after high school. She served in various capacities at the bank and enjoyed serving the public in numerous ways. She began her career at Iowa State Bank and later worked at the Citizen Bank and Great Western Bank. She served on the Mt. Olive Cemetery Board, and was a member of United Trinity Church, Eastern Star and Bankers Women Association. She was also very active at the Hamburg Senior Center and Food Pantry. Rosie enjoyed square dancing, ceramics, sewing, crafting, cooking and canning, shopping and the Sidney, IA Rodeo.
She is survived by her siblings: Donna Fritz of Sidney, IA, Ruth Ward of Riverton, IA, Mack Simpson (Bonnie) of Lincoln, NE, Judith Winkler of Mesa, AZ and Kathleen Stutheit of Nebraska City, NE; sisters-in-law: Jean Simpson and Gina Simpson, numerous nieces and nephews; “adopted” children Linda and Donnie Sears of Hamburg; numerous other family members and many friends.
In addition to her husband Howard, she was preceded in death by siblings: Chalmers “Bud” Simpson, Kay “Tator” Simpson, Betty Compton, Wayne Simpson and William “Bill” Simpson.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday; September 14, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg; burial will follow the services. Immediately following the services, there will be a time of fellowship and light lunch at the Riverton Community Building.
In honoring her wishes, there will be no visitation held.
Memorials may be given to the Riverton Fire and Rescue Dept.
