Obituary

Ronald F. Schmitz, age 78 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.

Ronald Francis Schmitz was born on September 23, 1943 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Gerald William and Helen Marie (Lavigne) Schmitz.  He grew up and attended school in Nebraska City, graduating from Lourdes Central Catholic with the Class of 1961.  Ron was married to Evette Bottcher and to this union three children were born:  Lisa Ann, Ronnie Lee and Marcy Renee.  They later divorced.

He proudly served in the United States Navy, entering on February 27, 1962.  Ron served for three years and was honorably discharged on January 6, 1965.

Ron worked for Western Auto in Nebraska City and then for Arlin Stutheit at Family Prescription in Nebraska City.  He was the Medical Supply Representative for some 20 years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.   He was a former member of the Eagles.  He was proud of being a member of A.A. and developed many friendships through his almost 25 years.  Ron also played a big part with the Knights of Columbus Food Pantry for many years.  He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. 

Ron is survived by his daughter:  Marcy Schmitz of Nebr. City, NE, son-in-law Henry Hert of Waterloo, NE; seven grandchildren:  Madison Bell, Jeremy Hert, Gage Fedoris, Eva Hert, Jordan Thomasson, Brooklyn Thomasson and Boston Thomasson; sister Sharon Crunk (Michael) of Nebr. City, NE; dear friends Andy and Joan Fedoris and their family; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Ronnie Schmitz in 1996, daughter Lisa Hert in 2019, brother Gerald Schmitz in 1994 and special friend Judy Cole in 2011.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Tom Schultes officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebr. City with Military Honors conducted by the United States Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (6/22) at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.  The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Lourdes Central Catholic in Nebraska City.
