Rita Wenzl Obituary

Rita T. Wenzl, age 98 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Rita Theresa (Pfeiffer) Wenzl was born on February 11, 1926 at the family home south of Nebraska City; the daughter of Andrew J. and Theresa G. (Meyer) Pfeiffer.  She was one of 11 children.  She attended St. Joseph Grade School near Paul, NE through the 8th Grade and later high school at St. Bernard’s Academy (Lourdes Central Catholic), where she graduated with the Class of 1947.

On April 13, 1948, Rita was united in marriage to Walter Louis Wenzl at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City and to this union six children were born:  Theresa, Michael, Mary, John, Norbert and Joseph.

During her high school years, Rita worked as an orderly (nurse’s assistant) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.  She also worked in the kitchen at Northside School.  For numerous years, she worked alongside her husband Walt at Wenzl Hardware in Nebraska City.   Rita also worked on the Election Board in Nebraska City for many years.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, St. Mary’s Altar Society and the Apostleship of Prayer.  She was a talented seamstress and was one who could fix anything.  She enjoyed collecting dolls and growing flowers.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children:  Theresa Billmeier (Lou) of Elkhorn, NE, Mary Powell (Scott) of Murfreesboro, TN, John Wenzl (Mary) of Nebr. City, NE, Norbert Wenzl of Grand Island, NE and Dr. Joseph Wenzl (Dawn Gary) of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren:  Jenny Billmeier Mallum (Marshall), Matthew Billmeier, Jeff Rowe (Jennifer), Carie Hulzebos (Ryan), Andrea Taylor (Greg), Joey Wenzl (Holly), Michael Wenzl and Theresa Horstman (Dillon); nine great-grandchildren:  Sydney and Halle Mallum, Lexi Rowe, Ava, Eli and Hugh Hulzebos, Grant and Bennett Taylor and Ryan Horstmann; step-grandchildren:  Michelle Kreifels, John Kreifels, Christy Pries (Scott) and Katie Miller (Clint) and their daughter Presley; sister Irene Peterson (Bob) of Davenport, IA; sister-in-law Rosemarie Pfeiffer of Nebr. City, NE; other family and many friends.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband Walt on May 29, 2022; son Michael Wenzl in 1998, grandson Andrew in 2000, sisters:  Delores Ryan, Esther Barton, Frances Pfeiffer and brothers:  Andrew, Robert, Leonard, Glen, Leo and Martin.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Frs. Mark Pfeiffer and Tom Schultes celebrating the Mass.

The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday (2/26) at the church followed by Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Church Fellowship Hall Renovation.
