Rita Carlstedt Obituary

Rita M. Carlstedt, age 97 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Auburn, NE.

Rita Marie Carlstedt was born on July 8, 1927 in Morrowville, KS; the daughter of Charles and Theresa (Nutsch) Huber.  She grew up and attended school in Morrowville, graduating from the Morrowville High School.  She then attended Fairbury Junior College where she obtained her Teaching Certificate and met her future husband, Melvin Carlstedt. 

Rita taught country school for a year and later on July 26, 1948, she was united in marriage to Melvin Elmer Carlstedt at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Morrowville, KS.  To this union two sons were born:  Gerald and Kenneth.  Rita and Melvin shared nearly 76 years together before his passing this year on June 29, 2024.

In 1949, the couple moved to Omaha, NE where Melvin worked as a Postal Clerk and Rita raised her family.  After Melvin retired, they were able to do a lot traveling in the United States and abroad.  They visited many Catholic Shrines, including trips to Lourdes France, Fatima Portugal and Rome.  In 1993, they moved to Nebraska City to be close to their grandchildren.

Rita was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Christian Mothers & Altar Society and the Legion of Mary.  She enjoyed volunteering at the nursing homes, where she called BINGO and she visited the sick and homebound.

She is survived by one son:  Kenneth Carlstedt (Paula) of Nebr. City, NE; two grandchildren:  Danny Carlstedt (Stefanie) of Omaha, NE and Patty Mattson (Luke) of Hickman, NE and six great-grandchildren:  Aubrey, Kailynn, Rylan, Jaxon, Blake and Christian; one brother Harold Huber of Morrowville, KS; other family and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Rita was preceded in death by her son Gerald Carlstedt on September 15, 2024, her parents and brother Lawrence Huber.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Mark Pfeiffer and Monsignor Mark Huber celebrating the Mass.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (10/26) at the church.  A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Lourdes Central Catholic School.
