Richard Eric Spiegel, son of Ruth (Hodde) and Richard D. Spiegel, was born March 7, 1948, in Hamburg, Iowa. He attended country school at Star, Hamburg schools and graduated with the Hamburg class of 1966. He majored in animal science at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri and graduated in 1970. While in college he earned a pilot’s license and played in the band, The Society. Following graduation he began farming with his father, raising crops and livestock, in Watson, Missouri. On July 10, 1976, he was united in marriage to Jonelle Lisabeth Woodward. They became the parents of three children, Andrew John Spiegel, Laura Elisabeth (Spiegel) Tobin and Kyle Thomas Spiegel. Dick felt blessed to later be joined in the operation of Spiegel Farms by Andy and Kyle.
Dick was a member of the United Trinity Church, served on the Board of Elders, as a Sunday school teacher, a Youth Club volunteer and sang in the choir. He also served on the Iowa State Bank Board, the Hamburg School Board, the National Swine Registry Board and served for over 20 years on the board of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative. He was a basketball official for 17 years and officiated both the Iowa High School Girls and Boys state tournaments. He was inducted into the Basketball Officials Hall of Fame in 2010.
He enjoyed spending time and traveling with good friends, raising pigs, an eclectic variety of music and walking at Waubonsie.
Dick was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was the source of adventure and fun, a patient teacher and an example of what it meant to work hard and persevere. The importance of his faith and his church were always evident in his life. He made his children and grandchildren laugh, cared for them, played with them and participated in their activities. He was the proudest of father and grandfathers. His family was his greatest joy.
He passed away on August 15, 2021, in Hamburg. Survivors are his wife, Jonelle, son Andrew and wife Molly, daughter Laura and husband Clint Tobin, and son Kyle and wife Becca, five grandchildren, Claire and Grant Spiegel, Allison and Clay Tobin and Nora Spiegel, nieces and nephews Alexis Klima, Tyler Woodward, and Kelsey Woodward, brother-in-law Tom (Teresa) Woodward of Nebraska City.
