Pastor Cotton will lie in state at Christ Lutheran Church in Nebraska City on Wednesday (3/25) from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   All are welcome to stop by the church.

Due to the CDC guidelines, the funeral service will be for the family only; however, the service will be live-streamed on Gude Mortuary's Facebook page.

Friends may attend the graveside services at Wyuka Cemetery on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and should follow the CDC guidelines of social distancing, hand hygiene, etc.

Rev. John Cotton 

Rev. John Cotton, age 64 of Nebraska City passed away at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, NE on March 20, 2020.

 He was born on November 21, 1955 at Orlando, FL; the son of Hugh M. and Jennie (Stanko) Cotton.  He attended school in Orlando and graduated from the Boone High School.  He later attended F.T.U. in Orlando.  John worked for the family insurance agency-Hugh Cotton Insurance Agency- in Orlando, FL for 20 years.

He was united in marriage to Lauren M. McIntosh on February 16, 1985 in Oviedo, FL and to this union one daughter Cathryn was born.

In 1994, he began studies at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO.  He was ordained in 1998 and began his career in the Ministry.   Prior to his ordination, he served as Vicar at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk, NE. 

Pastor John’s first assignment was at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Davenport, NE.  He would later move to Nebraska City in 2006 to become the Pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Nebr. City and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Weeping Water, NE.  

He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in both Orlando, FL and Omaha, NE.

He is survived by his wife Lauren Cotton of Nebr. City; daughter Cathryn Scheerer and husband Josh of Lincoln, NE; grandson C.J., and siblings:  Cindi Parker and husband David, Tom Cotton and wife Kathy all of Orlando and Nancy Wendt and husband Glen of Round Rock TX; other extended family, his church family and many friends.   He was preceded in death by his parents.

An open visitation will be held Wednesday (3/25) from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Nebr. City.  

A family funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church and the service will be live-streamed on Gude Mortuary’s Facebook page.

Graveside Services will be held Friday (3/27) at 2:00 p.m. at Wyuka Cemetery and all attendees should follow CDC guidelines of social distancing, hand hygiene, covering cough and sneezes, etc.   Memorials may be given to Mission Central of Middleton, IA or Orphan Grain Train of Norfolk, NE.
