Mary Louise (Hartnett) Bohlen

Mary L. Bohlen, age 87 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.

Mary Louise (Hartnett) Bohlen was born on June 30, 1939 in Twin Falls, ID; the daughter of Dee Warren and Virginia Mary (Shryer) Hartnett.  The family later moved to Percival, IA, where she attended country school and later Percival High School, graduating with the Class of 1957. 

Mary was united in marriage to Ernest Bohlen in 1958 in Sidney, IA and to this union four boys were born: Michael, James, Jeffrey and Christopher.  Ernest died suddenly in 1976 in a tractor accident and Mary was left to raise the boys on her own.  She worked at Arbor Lodge for several years and later as a nurses aide at the former Duffs Friendship Villa and the former  Nebraska City Manor (Golden Living Center).  Mary enjoyed gardening, canning and making delicious jellies and cakes.  She also loved to read and do puzzles.

She is survived by her sons: Michael Bohlen (Diana) of Talmage, NE, James Bohlen of Percival, IA, Jeffrey Bohlen of Hershey, NE and Christopher Bohlen of Nebraska City, NE; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters: Sharon Tumanut (Benesto) of Kansas City, MO and Wanda Covert of Crete, NE; sister-in-law Shirley Straw of Nebraska City, NE; nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

In addition to her husband Ernest, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Dean Hartnett.
