Marvin L. Penning, age 79, of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Marvin Leo Penning was born on December 19, 1942 in Granville, IA; the son of Edward Peter and Anna Priscilla (Klein) Penning. He grew up in the Granville area and attended country school near the home. He later attended St. Joseph Catholic School where he graduated with the Class of 1960.
After high school, he worked on the family farm and then moved to Omaha where he took business courses at the University of Omaha (UNO). In August of 1964, Marv entered the United States Army and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in August of 1966. After serving his country, he returned home and worked at Postal Finance in Omaha and later at U.S. National Bank in Omaha.
On April 15, 1967, Marv was united in marriage to Mary Alice Mayrose at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA and to this union two children were born: Michelle and Michael. Marv and Mary moved to Nebraska City in 1975 and he began working at Farmers Bank. He later worked at Randolph State Bank, Randolph, IA for some 10 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City and a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Optimist Club.
Marv is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Penning of Nebr. City; children: Michelle Neece (Justin) of Franklin, TN and Michael Penning (Kim) of Fairview, TN; five grandchildren: Kenadee, Jeremiah, Molly, Allie and Kason; siblings: Rosie Mayrose (Richard) of Aurora, CO and Elaine Broughton (Lewis) of Tulsa, OK; brothers and sisters-in-law: Vernon Mayrose (Sandy) of West Lafayette, ID, Flo Rosenberg (John) of Walnut Creek, CA and Arlene Cassidy of Golden Valley, MN; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Harold Penning, Catherine Fischer, Pat Cole, Cy Penning, Daniel Penning and an infant sister Doris Mae Penning.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Mark Pfeiffer and Fr. Tim Danek officiating. Military Honors will be conducted at the church following the Mass by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday (7/1) at the church. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Lourdes Central Catholic School.
