Marvin G. Giittinger, age 90 of Nebraska City passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.
Marvin George Giittinger was born December 12, 1934 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Paul and Ella (Hermann) Giittinger. He grew up and attended school in Nebraska City, graduating from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1953. One day while skating at the local skating rink, he met his future wife, Murilla Dovel. On November 11, 1954, Marvin and Murilla were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA and to this union six children were born: Dan, Karen, Jerry, John, Diane and Amy.
Marvin worked at various jobs over the years. He began his work career as a brick layer and then went on to work as a Milkman for Meadow Gold. He later delivered meat for Rhoden Meat Company and loaded trucks for All American Freight in Omaha. He began driving a semitruck for Nebraska Iowa Express (NIX) and later started M&M Trucking that he continued until 2018 when his health forced him to retire at the age of 84. He also owned and operated a food truck with his twin brother Mel called the Wagon on Wheels and he and his wife Murilla had a business called the Sweet Shop in downtown Nebraska City. He served in the Nebraska Army National Guard for six years.
Marvin was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was always very involved in all aspects of the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary and Knights of the Holy Sepulcher and delivered communion to many homebound St. Mary’s Parishioners over the years. He also helped with numerous Marriage Encounters and the Swing for the Retarded golf charity event.
He is survived by his wife Murilla Giittinger of Nebr. City; children: Dan Giittinger (Rickie) of Nebr. City, Jerry Giittinger (Katrina) of Weatherford, TX, John Giittinger of Nebr. City, Diane Rainbolt (John) of Hospers, IA and Amy Cullum (Bryan) of Bellevue, NE; son-in-law Clark Lowe of Lincoln, NE; 32 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren; other family and friends.
Marv was preceded in death by his daughter Karen Lowe in 2025, granddaughter Olivia McCoppin in 2010, daughter-in-law Rhonda Giittinger in 2007; his parents and brothers: Melvin in 2013 and Kenneth in 2008 and sister Shirley Adams in 2000.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Tom Schultes celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebr. City.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday (12/12) at the church followed by Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lourdes Central Catholic Endowment or the Knights of Columbus Food Bank.
