Marvel J. (Grudle) Travis

Marvel J. Travis, age 94 of Sidney, IA passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at her home.

Marvel Jean Travis was born on December 1, 1929 in Malvern, IA; the daughter of John Jacob and Minnie Catherine (Bruce) Grudle.  She attended school in Malvern.

On February 9, 1948, she was united in marriage to Donald Lee Travis in Hamburg, IA and to this union five children were born:  Dennis, Steve, Lorri, Timothy and Terry.  Donald preceded her in death on March 19, 1992.

In addition to raising her family, Marvel and her sister Eunice Travis were co-managers of the kitchen at the Sidney Community School District.  She began working at the school in 1979 and retired in 2013 after 34 years of employment.  Marvel was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA and the Altar Society as well as the Sidney American Legion Auxiliary. 

Those left to cherish her memory include her children:  Dennis Travis (JoElla) of Sidney, IA, Steve Travis (Debra) of Sidney, IA, Lorri Kinart (John) of Spring Lake, MI, Timothy Travis (Jill) of Sidney, IA and Terry Travis (Kim) of Sidney, IA; 12 grandchildren:  Amy Barker, Brent Travis (Darci), Tyler Travis (Megan), Lynde Travis, Reese Travis (Sig. other Brad Sala), Keith Simmons (Sarah), Josh Simmons (Cari), Miles Smith (Renee), Caine Smith, Carly Engel (Neil), Ciarra Doty (Alex) and Mallory Campbell (Matt); 28 great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren, a sister June VanScyoc of Thurman, IA; other family and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Marvel was preceded in death by her brothers:  Eldon, Everett and Elmo Grudle and her sisters:  Marian “Babe” Hall and Eunice Travis.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Doug Daro celebrating the Mass.  Burial will follow at the Sidney Cemetery in Sidney, IA.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday (6/9) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA or St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City, NE.
