Lois Quimby Obituary

Lois L. Quimby, age 97 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City, where she had been a resident for 15 years.

Lois Louise Quimby was born on November 16, 1926 in Crete, NE to Dr. Charley Christopher Duffy, DDS, and Louise Augusta (Segelke) Duffy, teacher.  Lois attended St. James Catholic School for 10 years and then transferred to public school.  Lois graduated from Crete High School in 1944 and Doane College in 1948 with a teaching degree.

Lois taught high school English and History for one year each at Wallace, NE and Milligan, NE and then returned to school at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, KS to receive a Library Science Degree in 1951.  Lois then worked for US Army Special Services at Camp Forsyth in Fort Riley, KS as a librarian from 1951 to 1956.  During this time she met and married fellow Nebraskan, Sargent Dick Quimby, on December 29, 1952.

As a military wife, Lois followed WWII Veteran, Dick on his assignments including Verona, Italy, which afforded them travel throughout Europe.  He was then stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky where she continued to work as a librarian from 1960 to 1967.  It was then that her Uncle Roy J. Ojers died and left his home to them in Nebraska City where they lived “happily ever after” in retirement until Dick’s death in 2007.

Lois eventually moved into the Ambassador in Nebraska City in 2009 where she resided until her death.  Lois was a staunch supporter of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Lourdes Central Catholic both in Nebraska City and a number of other charities.

Lois was blessed with many wonderful friends who maintained relationships with her despite changes in distances and time for whom she was extremely grateful.  May the Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on her soul and may God bless her.

She is survived by three nephews and three nieces:  Mark and Charla Quimby, Russell and Paula Quimby and Jay and Carolyn Quimby; five great-nephews:  Chad, Daniel, Tom, Brad and Matthew Quimby; two great-nieces:  Megan Bucelli and Casey Rutherford and other friends.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her parents, brother Charley (Louise) Duffy and brother in law Donavan (Ardyce) Quimby.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Tom Schultes celebrating the Mass.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Crete, NE.
