Lois A. Bassinger, age 94 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.
Lois Ann Bassinger was born on May 9, 1931 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Mark Herzog and Irene Velma (Schreiner) Behrends. She grew up and attended country school southwest of Nebraska City at District #30.
On October 27, 1951, Lois was united in marriage to Jimmie Gene Bassinger at Christ Lutheran (Delaware) Church in rural Syracuse, NE and to this union three children were born: Jimmie Wayne Jr., Rockie Duane and Connie Dorene.
Lois began working at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of sixteen. When she had her children, she stayed home to raise them and after her children started school, she went back to work at St. Mary’s Hospital. She worked there for 30 years where she was the Housekeeping and Laundry Supervisor, before retiring in 1996. In 1980, she received the St. Mary’s Hospital Employee of the Year award. She also worked for a time at the Nebraska City Sale Barn in the café and later, in the office. She loved to go dancing and attend country music festivals. She was known for her delicious baking, especially her homemade apple dumplings and sugar cookies. She loved taking her grandchildren camping at Indian Cave State Park. She also enjoyed attending all the different school and sporting events that her children, and later her grandchildren were involved in. Her family was the center of her life, and she loved them dearly.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jimmie Wayne Bassinger Jr. (Susan) of Syracuse, NE, Rockie Bassinger (Millie) of Nebr. City, NE and Connie Shallenberger (Steve) of Nebr. City, NE; seven grandchildren: Chad Bassinger (Jenny), Mandy Bell (Brad), Heather Liggett (Dan), Julie Conner (Travis), Tyler Bassinger (Lauren), Traci Dunham (Brandon) and Lisa Stanton (Dean); 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; three brothers and one sister: Allan Behrends, Dale Behrends and Dennis Behrends all of Nebraska City and Mary Lou Woods (Don) of Dunbar, NE; other family and friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Jimmie on November 13, 2022; her parents and siblings: Dean Behrends and Arlene Bassinger and sister-in-law Carol Behrends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Pastor Terry Weible officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday (5/13) at the mortuary.
