LaVerne G. “Slick” Baucke, age 88 of Nebr. City passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Prestige Care Center in Nebr. City
LaVerne Glen Baucke was born at home on the family farm near Vesta, NE; the son of Frederick W. and Anna Marie (Hothan) Baucke. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1950. He then entered the United States Air Force in 1953 and proudly served during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic. Slick was honorably discharged on December 6, 1956.
After his return from overseas he and his brother purchased a bar and bowling alley in Tecumseh. He then moved to Nebraska City and managed both Stephenson’s and Larson’s Liquor Stores. He later started selling apples. He had a big truck he drove across Nebraska selling apples out of it. He did this for many years until he retired. Slick credited his apple business success to giving his customers a sample. He loved garage sales, auctions and thrift stores. Everything he bought was a “KEEPER”. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting with his Vizsula dogs and carving diamond willow canes. In his later years, he loved playing cards with friends. His biggest pride and joy were his grandkids. He loved spending time with them.
He is survived by his two daughters: Tamela “Tammy” Secord and husband James of Syracuse, NE; LuAnn Snyder and husband Mitchell of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren: Jeffrey Casey (Leah McClure) of Kansas City, MO, Erin (Michael) Zimmerman of Lincoln, NE and Mandy Snyder of Lincoln, NE; great-granddaughter Lucy Zimmerman; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Slick was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Baucke; infant son Leslie; brother Kenneth Baucke and sister Lucille Wesemann and her husband Bill.
