Kerry Crain Obituary

Kerry Earl Crain, son of Jack and Marvel (Melton) Crain, was born on December 12, 1950, in Hamburg, Iowa—a place he would call home for his entire life and lovingly nickname “Zootown,” because, as he often said, you just never knew what might happen there. Kerry passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on March 15, 2026, after a brave and determined fight against cancer.

Kerry’s roots ran deep in Hamburg. His childhood was shaped by hard work on his family’s and other local farms, tending pigs and cattle, baling hay, and riding horses. Those early years built not only his work ethic but also the character and humor that so many came to love.

In school, Kerry was as accomplished as he was well liked. A 1969 graduate of Hamburg High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society and a standout athlete. Whether on the football field, basketball court, baseball diamond, or track, Kerry gave it his all. He earned first team All-Southwest Iowa honors in football and received All-State honorable mention. He was Homecoming King, football co-captain, and, most importantly, a friend to everyone. Kerry later attended Iowa State University.

In 1978, Kerry married Deborah Case. They made their home in Hamburg and raised three children, Josh, Toby, and Sommer.

Kerry was known for his tireless work ethic and his knack for staying busy. Over the years, he farmed, worked as a foreman at Missouri Beef, installed cable lines, managed at Conagra, trimmed trees, and took on countless other jobs—often just because he enjoyed having something to do. For 30 years, he faithfully delivered newspapers, a job he carried out with quiet dedication and pride; perhaps holding a record for the longest-running paper route around.

He had a special love for animals, especially his dogs, who were his companions on his daily drives through town. If you were looking for Kerry, you didn’t have to look far—just keep an eye out for his truck. Those drives were his routine and often his way of checking in on the people and places he cared about. His truck was more than just transportation—it was his office, his workshop, and his way of life. If you needed a tool, chances were Kerry had it in the backseat or tucked away in his toolbox.

Kerry had an easy charm about him and a way of making people feel at home. He struck up conversations wherever he went and built friendships that lasted a lifetime. He will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his strength, and his generous heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Jack Crain; a special niece, Jennifer Umbarger; and many lifelong friends who surely welcomed him home.

Kerry is survived by his wife, Deborah Crain of Hamburg, Iowa; his children, Josh Crain (Kelly) of Chicago, Illinois, Toby Crain of Hamburg, Iowa, and Sommer Crain of Dallas, Texas; his grandchildren, Marin and Knox Crain of Chicago, Illinois; his brother, Curt Crain (Judy); his sister, Cathy Crain, both of Hamburg; nephews Clint Crain (Sara), and Ken Umbarger; nieces Jana Von Seggern (Jon) and Chelsea Cooper, as well as many cousins and dear friends.

The family will receive guests for a visitation Saturday, March 28 th , 2026, from 2:00-3:00 with the funeral service directly following at Rash-Gude Funeral Home, Hamburg, IA. There will be a private family burial. A meal will be held at The Center following the services.

Memorials may be directed to the family who will distribute to the Hamburg Wildcat Sport Boosters, in honor of Kerry’s lifelong love of high school athletics, and to Waubonsie State Park, a place he frequented on his drives.
