Kent A. McGinnis, age 61 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City surrounded by his loving family.
Kent Alan McGinnis was born on January 20, 1965, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, NE; the son of Lee and Bev (Schumacher) McGinnis. He attended Country School District #29 through the 6th grade and then Nebraska City Junior High and Nebraska City High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1983. During high school, he participated in football and wrestling as well as FFA; earning the FFA State Farmer Award his senior year in high school.
Kent began farming at a young age and continued the job that he dearly loved for some 43 years. He prided himself in building and leaving a family legacy of farming. Kent enjoyed tractor pulling and snowmobiling in his younger years, but being on or by the water was a lifelong love of his, especially if it involved a boat. He enjoyed traveling and cherished the many trips he shared with his friends and family. His greatest and most treasured roles in life were being a son, husband, and dad, but nothing compared to the immense joy of being "Grandpa" to Hadlie and Landry. The farmer in him did everything 150% and that was no exception with his cancer fight.
On June 23, 1989, Kent was united in marriage to Cindy Royal at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City and to this union two sons were born: Derek and Kylan.
He is survived by his wife Cindy McGinnis of Nebraska City, NE; sons: Derek (Taylor) McGinnis and Kylan McGinnis all of Nebraska City; two granddaughters: Hadlie and Landry; his mother Bev McGinnis of Nebraska City; a brother Tim (Melissa) McGinnis of Nebraska City, NE; brothers and sisters-in-law: Kevin Royal of Lincoln, NE, Deb (Dan) Gardner of Plano, TX, Wes (Mary) Royal of Stanton, IA and Dave (Deb) Royal of Eagle, NE and many nieces and nephews. Kent is also survived by step-mother-in-law Dorothy Royal, and half-siblings-in-law: Tammy (Chris) Bando, Sara (Jim) Aughenbaugh, and Brian Royal, numerous cousins, and many, many friends.
Kent was preceded in death by his dad Lee McGinnis on October 24, 2023, mother-in-law Shirley Royal on November 21, 1999, father-in-law Frank Royal on April 13, 2024, and great-nephews: Everett Tjaden on March 14, 2020 and Kolter Tjaden on November 13, 2023.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thurs. (5/14) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Recitation of Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m.
