Joan E. Sterner, age 77 of Tecumseh, NE (formerly Nebr. City) passed away on December 2, 2021 at the Johnson County Hospital in Tecumseh.
Joan was born on February 18, 1944 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Frances Viola (Crowner) Kelley. She grew up and attended school in Nebraska City, graduating from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1963. She later attended Southeast Community College for two years, receiving an Associate Degree in Social Services.
On October 18, 1963, she was united in marriage to Lyle E. Sterner and to this union two daughters were born: Brenda and Lynn.
Joan worked at various jobs including, at the former Pendelton Woolen Mills, at the Ambassador as a laundry aide and most recently at Nebraska City Public Schools for the hot lunch program. She served on the Union Board while working at Pendelton’s. She also worked for Project Response and Social Services, helping those in need.
Joan was very active in her community as a Girl Scout and Brownie Leader, a Sunday School teacher, and she served as the PTA Treasurer. She was a member of the Nebraska City Rescue Squad for 16 years. During her time with the Rescue Squad she became an Emergency Medical Technician, Ambulance Driver and an AED Defibrillator Operator.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lyle Sterner of Tecumseh, NE; daughters: Brenda L. Wright of Nebr. City and Lynn R. Marion and special friend Ken Adkins of Tecumseh, NE; five grandchildren: Katherine Wright, Whitney Wright, Tyler Wright, Jon Wright and Brooke Sterner-Chase; three great-grandchildren: Justice, Sam and Rakim; her beloved dog Coco; other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.
