Jerris C. Hume, age 86 of Thurman, IA passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.
Jerris Cole “Jerry” Hume was born September 17, 1934 in Thurman, Iowa to Robert and Florence (Snodgrass) Hume. Jerry lived his entire life in Fremont County, Iowa in the communities of Thurman and Sidney. Jerry attended Thurman Public School graduating with the Class of 1952. 1952 was a very important year in Jerry's life. His family decided to visit the Christian Church in Sidney. He told his three kids that is where he met the prettiest girl he had ever laid eyes on - Patsy Barnes. Patsy must have considered Jerry to be as handsome as she was pretty. They wed on April 18, 1952 at the Methodist Parsonage in Glenwood, Iowa. Jerry and Patsy were blessed with three children: Jennifer, Debora and David.
God bestowed on Jerry three traits that made for a very good life: a strong work ethic, tons of common sense and a non-stop sense of humor. Using his strong work ethic and tons of common sense, Jerry started his first job while in high school working for Claude Sheldon at the DX Service Station in Thurman. He later worked for Jack Stanley at the rock quarry north of Tabor, Iowa. Jerry started his last job in 1961 with the Department of Transportation and retired in 1995 after thirty four years of service.
Jerry enjoyed fishing, bluegrass music, traveling and lively conversations. He could be found in a coffee shop or repair shop telling you " I graduated fifth in my class" when someone would reply with " that's pretty good how many kids in your graduating class?" Jerry's sober response was "five" (that's the non-stop humor). He was a member of the Tabor Christian Church and has a strong faith in God.
Jerry was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Bob Hume, Dean Hume and sister Jane Clements.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of sixty eight years Patsy Hume; daughters Jennifer (Paul) Kyndesen and Debora Hume (Gary Shamblen) all of Council Bluffs, IA; a son David (Nancy) Hume of Tabor, IA; grandchildren: Chandra (Jason) Ludlow, Shaun (Laura) Kyndesen, Hannah (William) Campbell, Leah (Ryan) Edwards, Andrew (Silvia) Hume and James (Kristen) Hume; great grandchildren: Marne and Miller Kyndesen, Jensen Ludlow, Samantha and Charlotte Edwards, Nikolas, Kylie, Elisa, Mya, Maddalynn, McKenna, Jaxxon, Abel, Alex, Jesse and Lottie Hume; sisters: Mary Hume of Council Bluffs, IA and Jo (Steve) Irwin of Kansas City, MO; brother in law Jim Clements of Lincoln, NE; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
