James Glenn Obituary

James N. Glenn, 87 of Sidney, Iowa passed away April 22, 2025.

Jim was born to James Leon and Leola (Sjulin) Glenn, the oldest of the four Glenn boys.  Growing up near Rockport, then Sidney, he enjoyed pranks, working with livestock and athletics…many of those events grew to legendary status over the years.

Jim attended Iowa State University and received his B.S. in Animal Science, and his Masters in Animal Breeding. Jim served as County Extension Director for 5 years, ISU instructor for 4 years, and Iowa Beef Improvement Association manager for 15 years.  He then managed private cattle companies from Montana to Georgia for the remaining years of his career.

Jim was passionate about genetics in the cattle industry and in later years he immersed himself in the study of horses. He enjoyed being a judge in livestock show rings at various county and state fairs.

Jim and Donna called many places home including, Ames, Greenfield, Billings, MT and Sharpsburg, GA, but their favorite was where they were born and raised— Sidney, Iowa— to which they returned to help care for friends and family.  Jim wanted it to be known that his favorite hymn was “Amazing Grace”--stating, “That’s me.”

Surviving their 67 years of marriage are: his wife Donna; his 4 children Krista (Gary) Harpenau of Remsen, Iowa, Kelly Van Fleet of Yorkville, Illinois, Geri (Roger) Sommerlot of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Travis (Julie) Glenn of Athens, Georgia; and sister Sue Nennemann of Phoenix, Arizona. Left to carry on his academic and athletic prowess, charming good looks, domineering debating skills, ability to cheat at cards, and marginal musical magic are his 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Preceding Jim in death are his 3 brothers: Bob, Mike and Pat; his parents, James Leon Glenn, Leola Nennemann and Ernie Nennemann; his grandson in-law, Scott Bariabar, granddaughter Heather Van Fleet; and son-in-law John Van Fleet, Sr.

A private family burial & memorial will be held at a later date.

Cards of condolences may be sent to Donna (as well VIRTUAL flowers on FaceBook, but please, Donna's children beseech you, no more plants at her home!)

Memorials may be sent to the Percival Community Church.
