Gilbert Nicholson Obituary

Gilbert (Bert) Lee Nicholson  age 71, of Saint Paul, MN passed away peacefully at home on January 22, 2024.

Bert was born in Grand Island, NE on August 25, 1952 to the late Raymond & Donna Nicholson.  In 1970, Gilbert graduated from Sidney High School, Sidney, NE.  While working in Grand Island, NE he met the love of his life, the late Suzanne Marie Nicholson (Miller).  On August 18, 1973, they were married at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE.  Gilbert & Suzanne moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where they raised their 2 daughters: Kimberly (Piitz) & Kelly Nicholson.  In 1987, Gilbert attended & graduated from SCC, Lincoln, NE with a Business Management Degree.  He retired after almost 30 years with the Nebraska Department of Roads, where he was the Sign Shop Supervisor in Lincoln, NE.

After losing the love of his life, his wife Suzanne Nicholson in April 2000, Gilbert met his second wife: Carol A. Nicholson who passed away in April 2012.  In October 2012, Gilbert married Loretta Nicholson & moved to Minnesota.  Gilbert loved his 4 granddaughters: Suzie, Sylvia Ellie & Lainley Piitz.  They meant the world to him.  Grandpa always tried to watch their school achievements/programs through Striv TV.  He always looked forward to their phone calls, cards & special visits when he came back to Nebraska for family events.

Gilbert was known for his extraordinary sense of humor, his love of writing stories, bowling (State Championship in 1993), fishing, and most of all for his bass guitar music. He was an accomplished bass guitar musician and he could either be found practicing different kinds of lyrics or music.  He played with several country bands, including: Unforgiven and Cactus Hill. Oftentimes Gilbert's band would be the opening act for big country stars: Lone Star, Diamond Rio & more when they came to Nebraska.  One of Gilbert's biggest highlights was when Lonnie & Kim surprised him on his birthday.  They took him to see Brooks & Dunn at the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln, NE.  It was such a highlight of his life.  He was like a kid in a candy store.  He was their biggest fan.  Gilbert took country dance lessons with his wife Suzanne & they both danced forever to all kinds of country music.  Gilbert was always the one to be the first to help others before himself.  He had a deep passion for those he loved dearly.  Always remember he loved us all.

Gilbert is survived by his 3rd wife Loretta of Roseville, MN, daughters: Kimberly (Lonnie) Piitz and Kelly Nicholson, 4 granddaughters: Suzanne, Sylvia, Ellie and Lainley Piitz, brothers: David (Cindy) Nicholson,  Allen (Nancy) Nicholson, Dale Nicholson, sister: Cheryl (Jim) Pfeiffer, Debbie (late Roger) Nicholson, two step-children: Ginya Davis and Spencer (Sara) Mattson, and five step grand-children, and many other relatives and friends.

Gilbert is preceded in death by his first wife: Suzanne Marie Nicholson (Miller) (April 2000), his second wife: Carol Ann Nicholson (April 2012), his parents: Raymond and Donna Nicholson, brothers: Roger & Rodney Nicholson, and Gilbert's in-laws: Ralph & Rose Marie Miller.
