Frederick C. Fichter was born on February 6, 1948, to Marian (Carlson) and Charles D. Fichter. He grew up in Randolph and graduated from Fremont-Mills High School in 1966.
Growing up, Fred had a love of animals. Some of his fondest memories were those spent in 4-H showing livestock. This passion continued, and he spent his entire life working with hogs and cattle. When he did find a moment to relax, he could be found sitting on the tailgate of his Ford pickup with a jug of iced tea, admiring the timber surrounded by lush green pasture.
Fred was blessed to meet a farm girl one night while he was out with the guys. He would be the first to tell you, it was love at first sight. On a snowy November eve, he married Kathe L. Almquist. Fred and Kathe raised two children, Kim and Kyle. Fred’s priority was his family. Those tailgate conversations seemed to always end with, “I’ve got your mother and you kids. I don’t need anything else.”
Fred was a life-long Fremont-Mills football fan. He could tell you the score of any game dating back to the 1960’s to the current day. Whether it was a home or away Friday night game, Fred would wait for Kyle to stop by his house after the game. The two would rehash plays and view game footage into the early hours of the morning. He was proud of his children’s accomplishments.
In recent months Fred enjoyed hearing about the illustration progress of Kim’s children’s book, a story inspired by an actual event. Fred owned a 1200 pound boar named Harley, and he entered the “family pet” in the Iowa State Fair Big Boar Contest. To this day, a picture of Harley showing off at the fair remains on the refrigerator.
As the years went by, Fred occupied his time following his grandkids in all their activities. Lynde, Kalyn, Hannah, Kendall, and Kynzie gave him plenty of volleyball, basketball, softball, and track meets to attend. Every home football game he leaned on the fence for four quarters watching number 66, Kellen. He was blessed to see his grandkids graduate high school, college, and pursue their passions. When the great-grandkids, Kaylee, Declan, Liam, and little Hannah came along, another generation snuggled on the couch next to him watching cartoons and eating cherry nut ice cream.
As Fred’s health began to decline, his one request was to stay in his own home until his youngest grandchild graduated. The Lord answered his prayer and he enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels from his back deck until December 28th when the Good Lord called him to his Heavenly home.
Fred was a quiet, gentle man who lived a simple life in a community he dearly loved, a place he called home for seventy-four years. A celebration of life will be held December 31st, the birthday of his beloved Kathe. Fred lived his life on his own terms and loved with all his heart.
