Florence Marie (Jones) McCord passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2023. She lived to be 104 years old. A longtime resident of Nebraska City, Florence was born July 31, 1918, the second to youngest of eight children of George Mack and Virginia Dell (Blevins) Jones.
Upon graduation from Nebraska City High School in 1937, Florence received secretarial training in Omaha. During World War II she worked as a stenographer for General Motors in Detroit, Michigan and later as a secretary for a theatrical booking agency in St. Louis, MO. While in St. Louis, Florence occasionally sang in nightclubs and at the NCO Club for the troops stationed in Jefferson Barracks.
Following the end of the war Florence returned to Nebraska City and married Howard McCord in 1947. They were married 64 years and had two children, James (Jim) and Elizabeth (Liz).
Florence was a talented musician and could play the piano by ear as well as read music. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Nebraska City for 71 years, serving as director of the Junior Choir and as a member of the Chancel Choir for many years. She was also a member of United Methodist Women, Esther Circle.
Florence is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Wanda McCord of Nebraska City and daughter Elizabeth (McCord) Bishop of Lincoln. Her grandchildren are Aaron McCord, Victoria (McCord) Ward and husband Tyler, Justin McCord, Miranda McCord, Jonathan Bishop and Matthew Bishop. She has one great-granddaughter, Alaina Bishop.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard McCord and son-in-law Donald Bishop. Also preceding her in death were her brother Tom Jones and sisters: Bess Miller, Lettie Trail, Nina Maude Whitney, Blanche Cassiday, Grace Thompson and Ellen Wieckhorst.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Ever Mudambanuki officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday (4/3) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or the Nebraska City Alumni Association.
