EVELYN ERHART BRUNS SEYBERT
Evelyn Pearl Erhart Bruns Seybert, age 89, of Nebr. City passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.
Evelyn was born on February 18, 1933 in rural Dunbar, NE, the daughter of Charles Manford and Ella Essie (Burris) Erhart. She graduated from Talmage High School with the Class of 1951, obtaining her Teaching Certificate in the summer of 1951 and then later earning her Bachelor Degree in Education from Peru State College. Evelyn received her Master Degree in Education from UNL, afterwards doing extensive specialized graduate study in education for those who are visually impaired at UNO, Illinois State University at Normal, and University of Texas at Dallas, ultimately receiving her master-level credentials in visually impaired education from University of Northern Colorado at Greeley.
Evelyn began her teaching career at country schools in Otoe County, teaching at Maple Grove and District #2. She then taught at Arbor Training Center for Mentally Challenged Children (Region V), and finally as an Elementary and Braille Specialist at Nebraska State School for the Visually Handicapped. She taught for 30 years, with 24 of those years being at the State School in Nebraska City. Evelyn was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association and of First Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, served on the Church Board, and in her retirement worked with the Sew ‘n’ Sews Quilting Group.
After her retirement, Evelyn volunteered for Respite Care, giving countless hours to family caregivers who needed time off from the demands of in-home care of a family member. Evelyn enjoyed baking. Her pies, cakes, and especially her cookies were regular treats at family and neighborhood gatherings. The cookie jar on top of the refrigerator in her kitchen was almost always full.
Evelyn had a caregiver’s heart which she gave willingly and sacrificially to her family, to the children in her care in every school where she taught, at church, and in her neighborhood. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and a leader in Girl Scouts. Evelyn never missed a game of her grandchildren or great grandchildren; she was their biggest cheerleader. Evelyn and first husband, Junior, received the Nebraska City Pioneers Booster Award in 1976.
She was married to Junior Brune Bruns on May 20, 1951 in Talmage, NE and to this union three children were born: Roger, Sandra, and Cheryl. Junior preceded Evelyn in death on March 19, 1990. She married Dale Seybert on June 26, 1991 in Fayetteville, AR and they shared 18 years together before his passing in 2009.
Those left to cherish Evelyn’s memory include her children: Roger Bruns of Edmond, OK, Sandy Silcox (David) of Nebr. City and Cheryl Edmisten (Scooter) of Nebr. City; step-children: Alan Seybert (Angela) of Omaha, NE, Mary Boerner of Lincoln, NE, Julie Laughlin (Jim) of Omaha, NE, and Nancy Seybert, Omaha, NE; five grandchildren: Christian Bruns (deceased), Amy Callen (John), Andrew Silcox (Cailin), Jason Edmisten (Jessie), and Nicolas Edmisten (Jacque); nine great-grandchildren: Connor, Brennan, Clara, Weston, Jackson, Alexa, Chase, Ellie, and Crew; her brother: Charles Leslie “Les” Erhart of LaVista, NE; other family and friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husbands, Junior Bruns and Dale Seybert; her parents, Charles “Charlie” and Ella Erhart; grandson Christian Bruns and her siblings: Sylvia, Dorothy, Esther, and Roy.
