Evelyn Baier Obituary

Evelyn Elizabeth Baier, age 94, of Avoca, NE became an angel peacefully on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at Morton Senior Living in Nebr. City.

Evelyn Baier was born on May 24, 1929 near Burwell, NE to Leonard Darius and Bessie Mable (Rinck) Maxfield.  She attended country school through the 8th grade and then high school in Burwell, NE graduating in 1946.   She taught at a one room school house near Burwell for the school years 1946-1947 and decided teaching was not for her.  She moved to Omaha for work and lived with her Aunt Cora.  While there, she met John Edison Baier and they married on December 12, 1947 in Council Bluffs, IA.  They farmed near Avoca, NE until John’s death in June 1988, after which their son Patrick continued the farming.  She helped extensively on the farm before going to work at Western Electric in Millard, NE in 1961.  She worked there until retiring in 1988.  All her life she taught her children work ethics from raising a big garden, canning, sewing, raising and dressing chickens, helping with the butchering of a hog or steer, milking cows by hand, and working in the field.  She would use the phrase “use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without”.  She was a Great Mom.

Evelyn and John joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1956 and in 1966 took their family to the Logan Temple in Utah to be sealed for time and all eternity.  She was very active in the church and taught classes in Primary, Sunday School, Young Women’s, and Relief Society for many years and held leadership positions in those organizations.  She went on a church mission as a temple worker in the Chicago Temple in 1988 for over a year and then continued working in the St. Louis Temple one week a month until Winter Quarters Temple in Omaha was built.  She then worked there for many years.  Some  of her hobbies were family history, making quilts for her family (which is close to about 80) and crocheting afghans.  In her later years she enjoyed watching birds, squirrels and rabbits and greatly enjoyed her collections of stuffed puppies.

Those left to celebrate her life include her children:   June Bennett (Gary) of Nehawka, NE, Patrick Baier of Avoca, NE, Colleen Jenkins (Michael) of Herriman, UT, Rosa McKenzie (David) of Avoca, NE and Randy Baier of Butlerville, IN; son-in-law Dennis Moon of Grand Prairie, TX;  40 grandchildren, 108 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; other family and many friends.

In addition to her husband John, she was preceded in death by her daughter Irene Moon; her sister Jewel June, three brothers:  Nathanial, Robert and Leonard, daughter-in-law Katherine Baier, great granddaughter Rosie Lou Alder, as well as her parents.

Her great faith in the Lord carried her through her life.
