Obituary

Edward H. Collins, age 91 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Edward Harold Collins was born on November 19, 1931 in Watson, MO; the son of Hubert and Allie (Gregg) Collins.  He grew up and attended school in Hamburg.

On September 13, 1951, Edward was united in marriage to Shirley June Stephens and to this union three sons were born:  James "Ed", Michael, and Stephen.  On February 20, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War.  He received many honors for his service, including a Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, 2 Over-seas Bars and the National Defense Service Medal.  He was honorably discharged on November 19, 1953.

He worked at various jobs over the years including Interstate Nursery, Morton House (Nebraska City), Hamburg Builder Supply and he was the Supervisor for Kodak in Colorado.  Edward was a member of the Hamburg American Legion for 65 plus years and was a volunteer for the Hamburg Fire Department in the 1960s.  He was a talented woodworker, furniture builder, and enjoyed working with his hands.

He is survived by his sons:  James “Ed” (Emilie) of Lincoln, NE, Michael (Margaret) of Burkburnett, TX and Stephen of Shenandoah, IA; nine grandchildren:  Heidi Musil (John) and Tammy Kunz (Brian) both of Colorado, Stephanie Shirley, Kathy Pounds, and Jennifer Smith all of North Carolina, Danielle Collins, Victoria Collins, Jonathon Collins all of Texas, Joshua Collins (Mindy) of Colorado; eight great-grandchildren:  Makayla and Caden Kunz and Lynneah Musil all of Colorado, Maria and Mason Collins, Rosie Collins of Texas, Thomas Shirley and AJ Pounds both of North Carolina; sister Irene McCall and husband Kenny of Riverton, IA; other family and friends.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife Shirley on Feb. 4, 2022; his parents and siblings:  Raymond, Joe, Floyd, Betty Bruce and Mary Brown.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.  Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg with Military Honors conducted by the Hamburg American Legion.

The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the mortuary.
