Dorla M. (Farrell) Long

Dorla Maye (Farrell) Long was born March 30, 1934, in rural Page County, Iowa, the daughter of Glade C. and Bernice C. Farrell. She passed away peacefully on September 23, 2023, with her family lovingly by her side at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 24 days.

Growing up in Page County, Dorla attended New Market Schools graduating in 1952. While attending school she met Donald (Don) L. Long, and they were united in marriage on June 7, 1952. To their union was born a son, Leslie Donald and a daughter, Rita Maye. In March of 1953, Don and Dorla moved to Nebraska City, NE for Don’s job. Dorla was always proud to call Nebraska City home.

Dorla was an active member of the Nebraska City First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.   She also devoted much time and energy to P.E.O. Chapter FV. She worked for many years in the banking industry at Midwest Federal, and then later in the billing department at St. Mary’s Hospital.   Family was one of Dorla’s greatest joys. She greatly enjoyed being a part of their lives.  She was so proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and she enjoyed watching and supporting all of their activities.   Dorla will always be remembered for her thoughtfulness and caring, always quick to send a special card that she personally created specifically for the receiver.

Dorla was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years; her parents; 2 infant siblings at birth; brother and sister-in-law Darwin and Jeanne Farrell; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Herald and Edith Long, Jerry and Doris Crowe, Harold and Verla Kirsch; great-grandchild Luke Johnson prior to birth.

Those left cherishing her memory and carrying on her legacy include son and daughter-in-law Les and Terri Long of Lincoln, NE; daughter and son-in-law Rita and Tom Lorimor of Sidney, IA; grandchildren Debra (Josh) Straw of Waukee, IA, Casey (Jon) Engdahl of Lincoln, NE, Renee (Ross) Johnson of Sidney, IA, Brady (Cassie) Long of Lincoln, NE; great grandchildren Kaedyn and Landan Straw, Maddie and Jaxon Engdahl, Levi and Nolan Johnson, Rhett and Macklynn Long; other relatives and friends.

Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near. So loved, so missed and held so dear.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Nebr. City.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023 at First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City, NE.  Graveside Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Old Memory Cemetery, near New Market, IA.  The casket will remain closed.

The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
