Donald Gardner Obituary

Donald Gardner, age 80 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at the Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln, NE.

Donald Fay Gardner, son of Casey Fay and Hazel Mae (White) Gardner was born May 24, 1943 in Hamburg, IA.  He passed at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 16 days.  He attended high school in Sidney, IA, graduating with the Class of 1960.  Don worked for the Sidney Argus Herald Newspaper for a time and enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 3, 1964.  His basic training was at Biloxi, MS, where he was trained in radar.  After basic training, Don was stationed at the Air Base at Leon, France, where he was an Air Traffic Controller.  When his tour there was completed, he was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue.  While at Offutt, he worked in the Tower and later in the Radar Unit.

He was married to Sandy Murphy while in the service and they had a daughter, Tara Lynn, and a son Scott.  He was honorably discharged on February 2, 1968.  Don was married to Susan Ricardel on June 5, 1995 in Nebraska City and later on June 5, 1999 in the Philippines, where they had a large Catholic wedding at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.   They had a son James on May 19, 1996.  Don was a loving husband and father, and a dog lover.

Don worked for many years at Griffin Pipe Co. in Council Bluffs, IA.  He later worked at Cargill in Nebr. City and retired from there in 2005.

Those left to mourn his passing include his loving wife Susan Gardner of Nebr. City, NE; son James Gardner of Lincoln, NE; “daughter” Barbie Aldana Gardner of Auburn, NE; grandsons:  Brian Thomas and Logan Gardner of Ralston, NE; daughter-in-law Angie Gardner of Ralston, NE; aunt Marjorie Ward of Nebr. City, NE, cousin Barbara Lamb of Hamburg, IA; sister-in-law Lylith Gardner of Millard, NE; nieces:  Tammy Kuper of Norfolk, NE, Angella Hines of Bellevue, NE and Melissa Frazier; Nephews:  Casey Gardner of Omaha, NE and Mike Gardner of Bellevue, NE; other family and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Tara Lynn and son Scott Gardner and brothers:  Casey and John Gardner.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City.  Burial will be held at a later date in Mt. Olive Cemetery at rural Hamburg, IA.

The Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m., prior to the Mass at the church.

Open Visitation/Viewing will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to Nebraska City Rescue Squad.
