Donald D. Ashenfelter, age 86 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.
Donald Dean Ashenfelter was born on February 6, 1937 on his grandparents farm in Anderson, IA; the son of George Ashenfelter and Mildred Focht. His grandparents, Merle and Perry Focht raised him on the farm. He attended country school and later the Sidney High School, Sidney, IA where he graduated with the Class of 1957.
He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Vollmann on December 9, 1967 in Sidney, IA. Don worked for many years at the former Gangel Oil Company as an over the road tire man and tank wagon driver. He later went to work for the Farmer’s COOP as their Station Manager for some 14 years where the farmers referred to him as “The Fastest Man in the West”. After retirement, he worked part-time for Douglas Tire.
Don was an Oklahoma Sooners Fan all his life and so were his sons. He was their Number #1 Fan, and no Nebraska apparel gear was allowed in the house! Don’s brothers were from Shenandoah, IA and later moved to Oklahoma. Family was the most important thing to Don followed by his Chevy and hunting and fishing. He enjoyed fishing with his Uncle Eldon growing up.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Mary Ashenfelter of Nebr. City; children: Todd Ashenfelter (Becky) of Shenandoah, IA and David Ashenfelter (Angie) of Independence, MO; daughter-in-law Donna Ashenfelter of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; siblings: Ronald Burton of Georgetown, TX, David Burton of Moore, OK, Darlene Emory of Bethany, OK and Donna Elliott of Bethany, OK; other family and many friends.
Don was preceded in death by a daughter Donna Smith, sons: William Ashenfelter and Paul Christiansen, a granddaughter Amber and three brothers: Robert, Mike and Richard who died at birth.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with burial to follow.
