Dick Workman Obituary

Dick M. Workman, age 87 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Ambassador in Sidney.

Dick was born on April 2, 1932 in Hamburg, IA; the only child of Carroll and Kathryn (McKean) Workman.  He grew up and attended school in Hamburg, graduating with the class of 1949.

He joined the United States Army on October 13, 1952 and proudly served his country during the Korean War as a bridge engineer near Chuncheon.  He was honorably discharged on August 18, 1954 as a Sergeant.  On May 2, 1967 he was united in marriage to Jo Ann Kingery in Vicksburg, MS and to this union two children, Kathryn and James, were born.

Dick worked for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad before his service with the Army and then he worked for Payne Valley Farms until his retirement.

He dedicated his entire life to community and high school athletics in Hamburg and was instrumental in planning, organization and construction of new track facilities as well as a new baseball complex on which his name is honored.  Dick received many awards during his coaching career including the Iowa Football Coaches Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Although his selfless commitment to all youth sports was evident, his biggest love was baseball and his 1972 State Championship team.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children:  Kathryn Workman and husband Darren Haller of Denver, CO and James Workman and wife Heather of Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren:  Alexa, Gabrielle and Eli; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Jo Ann on February 16, 2010.
