Conrad L. Brake

Conrad L. Brake, age 77 of rural Thurman, IA passed away on Friday evening; November 1, 2024 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA.

Conrad Lee Brake was born on May 5, 1947 in Council Bluffs, IA; the son of Harvey L. and Vernie E. (Greenwood) Brake.  He attended school and graduated from the Glenwood High School, Glenwood, IA with the Class of 1966.  Shortly after his graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps on May 31, 1966 and honorably and faithfully served his country until his discharge on May 28, 1970.  During his time he received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

He owned and operated Conrad Construction for many years and was a very skilled carpenter.  He also worked for several years for the Sherwood Family in Percival, IA at the lumber yard and in various capacities.   He was a member of the American Legion.   Conrad was an avid animal lover and dearly loved dogs and cats.  He also enjoyed playing pool and snow skiing in Keystone, CO.

He is survived by his significant other Gayle Meek of Hamburg, IA; sisters:  Donna Chute of Des Moines, IA and Sharon Beer and husband Mike of Campbellsville, KY; a brother Douglas Brake and wife Tew of Deltona, FL; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Vernie.

A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held Friday (Nov. 8) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Private family graveside services will be held at the Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, IA with complete military honors.

Memorials in his memory may be directed to the Tabor Rescue.
