Arnold Kreifels Obituary

Arnold C. “Arnie” Kreifels, age 91 of Nebraska City passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at his home in Nebraska City.  

Arnold was born to Clarence “Brownie” and Rose (Volkmer) Kreifels on January 22, 1930 near Paul, NE.  He was educated in Nebraska City and graduated from St. Bernard’s Academy with the Class of 1947.  During his school years he loved playing basketball.  On October 25, 1948, he entered the United States Coast Guard and honorably served his country until his discharge on May 18, 1950.  After his service to the country, he worked in the grocery business; first at Larson’s and later at Norman’s IGA.  He also bartended at the Eagle’s Club on weekends.  He was loved by fellow employees and customers because a smile was always on Arnie’s face.

On May 14, 1951, Arnold was united in marriage to Nellie Lou Burbee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City and to this union two sons were born:  Timothy and Kevin.  She preceded him in death on May 24, 1996.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight and he was a 4th Degree Knight.  He was an active Catholic, serving Adoration and attending Mass and activities.  He was also a member of the Eagles.  Arnold was a Husker Football Fan and attended many games at home and on the road.  He also cheered on the Creighton and Gonzaga basketball teams.  He loved to travel and explore all the beautiful places around the United States.

He is survived by children:  Timothy Kreifels of Shenandoah, IA and Kevin Kreifels and wife Anita of Grand Island, NE; five grandchildren:  Rachel Kreifels, Ashley McIntosh, Katie Kreifels, Aaron Kreifels and Joseph Kreifels; seven great-grandchildren:  Elizabeth, Julia, Andrew, Katy, Sawyer, Gage and Max; brothers: Edwin Kreifels of Omaha, NE and Jerome Kreifels of Alda, NE; sister-in-law Phyllis Burbee of Union, NE; friend Connie Finley; many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers:  Virgil and Norman and daughter-in-law Jayne Kreifels.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Tom Schultes officiating.  Those attending are encouraged to wear casual or Nebraska attire.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the United States Coast Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends on Wednesday (8/4) from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City followed by a rosary/prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to family choice.
