Merle Meyer, 92, of Nehawka passed away at home on September 11, 2018.  He was born in rural Avoca, NE on November 17, 1925 to George and Theresa (Sand) Meyer.

Merle attended Cottage Hill Country School and graduated from Avoca High School in 1943.  On August 12, 1947 Merle married Oqual Hunker.

Their children are:  Jody LaMontagne (Dave), Bellevue, NE, Marley Neddenriep (Terry), Lincoln, NE, Mark Meyer (Marlene), Nehawka, NE, Steve Meyer (Jodie) Nebraska City, Kris Meyer, Lincoln, NE, , NE.  There are also thirteen grandchildren and twenty three great-grandchildren.
Siblings are James Meyer (Joan) of Avoca, NE and Richard Meyer (Luella) of Weeping Water.

Preceding Merle in death were wife, Oqual Meyer, infant sons, Daniel Merle and David Merle, an infant daughter and grandson Anthony Rohlfs, brothers, Donald, Hubert, Roy, Ralph, John, Carrol Meyer, and sister, Loretta Linhardt.

Merle entered the U.S. Army after graduating from Avoca High School in 1945.  He served from May 1945 until December 1946.  Upon his return home, Merle began farming full time near Avoca.  Farming became a lifetime commitment for Merle.  Many of his happiest days were spent working the fields, planting, harvesting and spending time at the sale barns.  Merle liked to have fun.  In addition to working together on the farm, Merle and Oqual enjoyed dancing, playing cards in Avoca, traveling and attending the Cass County Fair with the grandchildren.  Merle had a special interest in Nebraska football and Creighton basketball.  Some of the fondest family memories involve children/grandchildren gatherings at the farm with Merle and Oqual.

Merle maintained a lifetime membership at Holy Trinity Catholic Church near Avoca where he served as an acolyte and maintained a Knights of Columbus membership.  As a kind and humble man, Merle held the welfare of family members as his primary interest.

The rosary will be held on Friday, September 14, 5:00 pm with visitation following.   The funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday, September 15 at 10:00 am.  Both services will take place at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, rural Avoca, NE.
