William D. (Bill) Shirley

William “Bill” D. Shirley, age 77 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Bill was born on February 20, 1942 in Nebraska City, NE; the son Plato and Viola (Gardner) Shirley.  

He attended school and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1960.  On February 10, 1966 he entered the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War.  Bill was honorably discharged on February 9, 1968.

He worked at various jobs over the years, including at Cargill, where he drove truck and was a dock supervisor.  He retired from Cargill after some 20 years of employment there.  He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. and a former member of the Eagles Club.  Bill loved watching NASCAR and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker Football fan.  

He is survived by his children:  Scott Peters of Osage Beach, MO, Ben Shirley and wife Rachel of Edwards, CO, Anne Bohl and husband Kirby of Nebr. City and Bradley Shirley and special friend Christina Hilgerson of Nebraska City;  grandchildren:  Carl James Shirley, Zayden and Ali Bohl; a sister Nancy Fox of New York; other family and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers:  Eugene and Bobby Shirley, and one sister Donna Bonebright.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Michael Schmidt officiating.  A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (4/5), at the Omaha National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Otoe County Veterans Van.
