Melvin A. Gress, age 92 of Nebr. City passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.
Melvin was born on December 22, 1925 south of Nebraska City, NE at the home of his parents, Joseph and Anna (Schnitzer) Gress. On July 24, 1945, Melvin was united in marriage to Norma Jean Kreifels at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church near Paul, NE and to this union four children were born: Sharon, Jim, Sally and Steve.
Melvin worked as a farmer his whole life, a job he truly loved. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Eagles.
He is survived by children: Sharon Durr of Nebr. City, Jim Gress and wife Carolyn of Nebr. City, Sally McElroy of Bennington, NE and Steve Gress and wife Chris of Ashland, NE; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law LeRoy Kreifels of Nebr. City; sister-in-law Mary Kreifels of Nebr. City; other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Norma Jean on July 3, 2018; his parents Joseph and Anna Gress; son-in-law Arnold Durr; brothers, Harold Gress and Leonard Gress; sister Esther Wirth; brother -in-law Milton “Bobby” Kreifels and sister-in-law Velda Kreifels.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Mark Cyza officiating. Burial will follow at St. Benedict’s Cemetery.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening, Sept. 7 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. prior to the Rosary.
Memorials may be given to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Lourdes Endowment or Nebraska City Rescue.
