Carl Welchans Obituary
Carl Boyd Welchans passed away surrounded by his family at his rural Farragut home on October 8, 2018, at the age of 93 years, 5 months, and 6 days. He had been under the care of St. Croix Hospice and his family was assisted by Carol Jennings.
Carl was born on May 2, 1925, at home to Mary Ann McMullen and David Linneaus Welchans. A sister Marie completed the family on May 24, 1927. He attended country school at Sedgewick School about a mile from his home. He graduated from Farragut High School in 1943 along with his future wife Martha Ann Bidwell.
Since World War II was in progress, Carl joined the Army on March 22, 1945 and served in the Pacific Theater on Okinawa and was discharged on December 8, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning home from the war, he bought a farm, put in a crop and then decided to travel to Casper, Wyoming, where he married his high school sweetheart, Martha, on November 23, 1948.
Carl and Martha raised three sons: David Allen (Sheryl), Kenneth Carl (Peggy Sue) and William Boyd (Angie). Carl actively farmed until just the last few years.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Martha, and sister Marie.
Surviving him are: brother-in-law Perry Cloyd of Gunbarrel, Texas; sister-in-law Jane Bidwell Norman of Cheyenne, Wyoming; brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Carol Bidwell of Casper, Wyoming; his three sons all of the Farragut, IA area; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, other extended family, and many friends.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Farragut Cemetery in Farragut, IA with Phil Wing officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Sidney, IA American Legion.
The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the services, at Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.
Memorials may be given to the Farragut Cemetery, Riverton Rescue or Farragut Rescue.
