Edward L. Rodgers, age 89 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Golden Living Center in Nebr. City.
Edward was born on December 4, 1920 in Elbing, KS; the son of Edward L. and Ella Mae (Dunn) Rodgers. He was united in marriage to Virginia M. Winkler on June 20, 1943 in Reserve, KS.
Edward served his country in the United States Army during WWII from June 13, 1942 to October 25, 1945. He completed basic training in Florida and was stationed at Ft. Sumter, SC before being transferred to England with the 8th Air Corps 486 Bomb Group. He was involved in missions in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Air Offensive Europe and Rhineland Adrennes from May 3, 1944 to October 4, 1945.
He farmed for 13 years, in addition to being an elevator manager, feed grinder and seed cleaner.
He served on the Reserve, KS High School Board of Eduation. While in Nebr. City, NE he was past commander of the American Legion Post #8, and also was manager of the Nebraska City Youth and American Legion Baseball Program for many years.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Virginia M. Rodgers of Nebr. City, NE; children Jeff Rodgers & wife Jennifer of Tuscaloosa, AL and Jenifer Ryan of Lincoln, NE and Cris Rodgers of Omaha, NE; 3 grandchildren: Nicholas, Joshua and Madison; 2 sisters: Uverna Lorenz of Reserve, KS and Marjorie Reichardt of St. Louis, MO and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters: Gertrude Frederich and Anna Wing.
Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Cornelsen Cemetery, east of Reserve, KS; inurnment will follow the services. Complete military services will be conducted at the services.

Betty Lou Ledford, age 75 of Riverton, IA passed away early Friday, July 2, 2010 at her home.
Betty Lou was born on October 27, 1934 in Rogersville, MO; the daughter of Everett Harrison and Elsie Ardonna (Thompson) Mincks. Her family moved to Iowa in 1938. She graduated from Riverton High School as Salutatorian of the Class of 1953.
She was united in marriage to Avanlee Dale Ledford on December 16, 1957 in Sidney, IA. They resided in Sidney until moving to Riverton in 1971. Betty Lou worked at Nishna Valley State Bank as the Cashier/Executive Officer for 25 years before retiring due to health reasons.
Betty Lou's passion was music. Her voice will be missed. She also loved to decorate for holidays for all to enjoy. Her motto was "Shop till you drop!"
She is survived by her husband of 53 years Avanlee Dale Ledford of Riverton, IA; daughters Cynthia Yoder and husband Michael of Loxahatchee, FL; Shelly Driskell and finance James of Riverton, IA; granddaughters: Rachel, Brianne and Alexus; step-granddaughters: Lauren and Lindsay and many other family members and lifelong special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents and aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA; burial will follow at the Riverton Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday (7/4) at the mortuary.

Donald L. Jennings, age 67 of Riverton, IA passed away on Tuesday; June 29, 2010 at his home.
Donald Lee Jennings was born on August 18, 1942 in Hamburg, IA to Albert T. and Alma L. (Rose) Jennings. Don attended school in the Riverton School system and graduated from Riverton High School with the Class of 1961.
After graduation, Don moved to Lincoln, NE and worked for Stoners Outdoor Advertising. In 1962, he moved back to the Riverton area and drove a truck for Melvin Moody and Glenn Randolph. In 1963, Don enlisted in the Iowa National Guard and served until he was honorably discharged in 1970.
On January 15, 1965 he was united in marriage to Patty Elaine Detrick and to this union four children were born: Stephen Don, Sherry Lea, Billy Lee, and Mark Allen. In 1968, Don started farming with his in-laws Russell and Mary Detrick and continued farming until June 29, 2010.
On December 7, 1996 he was united in marriage to Carol Glenn.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Carol Jennings of Riverton, IA; children: Steve Jennings and wife Sandy of Riverton, IA; Sherry Gilbert and husband Russ of Hamburg IA, Bill Jennings and wife Denise of Malvern, IA; and Mark Jennings and wife Gayle of Tarkio, MO; step-children: Jennifer, Dustin, and Michael Glenn; grandchildren: Ashley Gilbert, Jordon and Colby Jennings and Tyler Jennings; step-grandchildren: Amber and Alexa Grahm, Ryan Burke, Stephanie Neve and husband Steve and Brandon Shannon; his brother Tom Jennings and wife Judy of Sidney, IA; an uncle Robert Rose of Riverton, IA; numerous cousins, nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding Don in death were his parents, his wife Patty, a brother Ben and step-grandson Wesley Hall.
Don loved farming. He also enjoyed going and watching his grandkids play sports. When Don was in high school he loved basketball, and watching his grandkids play this sport was one of his favorites things.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Methodist Church in Riverton, IA with Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating; burial will follow at the Riverton Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening (7/2) at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton.

Ralph R. Klein, Jr., age 73 of Nebraska City passed away late Monday, June 28, 2010 at BryanLGH West in Lincoln, NE.
Ralph was born on April 18, 1937 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Ralph R. and Charlotte B. (Heinke) Klein, Sr. Ralph attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1955.
He worked many years as an upholsterer and painter. He was a member of the Eagles where he had served as President and as a Trustee. Ralph loved shooting pool and spending time with his family. He was an avid outdoorsman who liked to hunt and fish among other things.
Ralph is survived by his children: Timothy Klein and wife Chris of Papillion, NE and Jayne Fuglemsmo and husband Steve of Papillion, NE; significant other Jean Griepenstroh of Nebr. City, NE; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; a sister Karen Shippey and husband Stuart of Madison, NJ; niece Rebecca Shippey of Chatham, NJ; an aunt: Bernadette Bell of Lincoln, NE and other family and friends.

Floyd E. Kinnison, age 77 of Nebraska City passed away on Friday; June 25, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City.
Floyd was born on August 28, 1932 at Nebraska City, NE; the son of Raymond H. and Gladys L. (Meyer)
Kinnison. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the class of 1950.
He entered the US Navy on January 18, 1952 and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on January 17, 1956 after four years of service.
He was united in marriage to Donna G. Johnson on February 5, 1956 at Nebraska City, NE and to this union seven children were born: Terry, Jane, Judy, Kippy, Kimberly, Kristie and Billy. Floyd was a devoted and loving husband, dad, and grandfather.
Floyd worked for the Nebraska City Utilities for 44 years and retired from there. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, and the Archery Club.
He is survived by his wife of over 54 years Donna Kinnison of Nebr. City; children: Terry Kinnison of Nebr. City, NE, Judy Gilsdorf and husband Marvin of York, NE, Kippy Lauber and husband Martin of Fairmont, NE, Kimberly Sherwood of Lincoln, NE, Kristie Ward and husband Lester of Nebr. City and Billy Kinnison and wife Mary of Eagle, NE; sister Carol Hoyle and husband Don of Nebr. Mark A. Riege, age 49 of Greenwood, NE; formerly of Nebraska City passed away at his home on Thursday; June 17, 2010 from an apparent heart attack.
He was born on June 22, 1960 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebr. City; the son of Orville Frank And Delrosa Joan (Kreifels) Riege. Mark attended school in Nebr. City and graduated from Nebr. City Lourdes High School with the class of 1978. During his time in high school, he was an outstanding athlete - especially in football. He was the 1977 Class C-2 Defensive Player of the Year, was a two time offensive/defensive all conference selection and was an all state linebacker. Mark was also on Lourdes Basketball Team that won the Galaxy North Basketball Championship. He currently holds the Pole Vault Record of 12'6" at Lourdes.
He was united in marriage to Margaret Studnicka on October 31, 1997 in Plattsmouth, NE. Mark was a member of Local #464 Steamfitters Union. He was a licensed plumber and was also Certified in Medical Gas.
He is survived by his wife Margaret; his seven children: James Vaske of Lincoln, NE, Ian Vaske of Rock Springs, WY, Otis, Anton, Hanna, Julaina and Emily Riege all of Greenwood, NE; his mother Delrosa Riege of Nebr. Ruth I. (Warren) Shaffar, age 89 of Nebraska City, NE passed away early Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Morton House Assisted Living in Nebraska City.
Ruth was born on January 19, 1921 in Nebr. City, NE; the daughter of Louis and Nancy (Rutherford) Preston. Ruth was united in marriage to William "Bill" Warren on June 3, 1939 and to this union three children were born: Lila, Roger and Ron. Bill preceded her in death on January 17, 1984. Ruth later married George Shaffar in December of 1990 in Nebr. City, NE.
Ruth worked as a cook at Steinhart Lodge for many years. She also worked at Morton House Kitchens and was the manager of A&W Root Beer in the 1950s. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Nebr. City and taught Sunday School there for many years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Legion Auxiliary and served as president for both organizations. She also belonged to the Art Guild.
She is survived by her husband George Shaffar of Nebr. City, NE; children: Lila Kreifels and husband Melvin of Nebr. City, NE; and Ron Warren and wife Judy of Early, IA; step-children; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; special niece Phyllis O'Flaherty of Nebr. City, NE; sister Betty Runkles of Shenandoah, IA; sister-in-law Becky Cole of Nebr. City; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Bill and a son Roger on May 20, 1991 and her parents.

Catherine Margaret Roddy, MEMORIAL TRIBUTE
Age 91 of Nebraska City; affectionately known as "The Hat Lady of Nebraska City" passed away on Sunday morning; June 13, 2010 at her home.
She was born on March 24, 1919 in Kansas City, MO; the daughter of Lawrence and Margaret (Nolan) Sullivan. She attended school in Omaha and graduated from St. John's High School with the class of 1936. Following her graduation, she attended St. Catherine School of Nursing in Omaha, NE and graduated in 1939 as a Registered Nurse.
She was united in marriage to Michael A. Roddy, Jr. on June 15, 1943 at St. Bridgett's Catholic Church in Omaha, NE. He preceded her in death in 1973 just before Christmas. Catherine worked as a R.N. and was a housewife and homemaker. After the children were raised, she worked at the Morton James Public Library in Nebraska City for several years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers.
She is survived by her six children: Michael A. Roddy III of Madison, AL, John Roddy of Nebr. City, Pat Roddy and wife Joyce of St. Peters, MO, Brother Bob Roddy of Prior Lake, MN, Jim Roddy of Kansas City, MO and Susan Olson and husband James of Liberty, MO; six grandchildren: Jared Roddy and wife Kristi, Logan Roddy and Erin Roddy; Nicholas Olson, Nathan Olson and Jessica Olson; other family and many friends.
In addition to her beloved husband Michael, she was preceded in death by an infant son and three siblings.

Age 61 of Nebraska City passed away at his home on Saturday; June 12, 2010 very unexpectedly.
Randy John Esser was born on November 14, 1948 in Nebraska City; the son of John Robert and Marjorie Elizabeth (Teten) Esser. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebr. City Lourdes High School with the class of 1967.
He was united in marriage to Vernna Camby on August 28, 1972 and they later divorced in 1967.
Randy served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was discharged as a Sergeant and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
He was a licensed Barber in both Nebraska and Colorado and barbered in Nebraska City for several years. He was an Engineer for Amtrak and worked out of both Denver, CO and Albuquerque, NM. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebr. City, NE.
He is survived by three children: Tina Esser Karr of Hastings, NE; John Esser and wife Kara of Hastings, NE and William Esser and wife Melanie of Hastings, NE; four grandchildren: Samantha, Nathan, Taylor and Zachary; a sister Paris Jordan and husband Craig of West Plains, MO; brothers: Norbert Esser and wife Violet of Nebr. City, Jan Esser and wife Ila of Syracuse, NE and Kevin Esser of Nebr. City; sister in law Lois Esser of Nebr. City; other relatives and many friends.

John L. Reimers, age 71 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.
John was born on August 5, 1938 in Auburn, NE; the son of Everett N. and Clara M. (Stites) Reimers. He graduated from Brock High School.
He worked at Tri-Pac Cabinets Factory in Auburn for many years. He was a huge Nebraska Football fan and was a member of the University of Nebraska Booster Club.
John is survived by a sister Joan K. Vrba of Morristown, NJ; two nieces: Rhonda Vrba of Morristown, NJ and Ann Baumgarten and husband Mark of Hillsdale, NJ; one nephew John Vrba of Morristown, NJ; three great nieces and nephews: Leah, David and Noah Baumgarten of Hillsdale, NJ and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his Dad in 1983 and his Mom in 2003; a brother Charles Reimers in 1962 and brother-in-law Ronald Vrba in 1999.

Bee was born on February 5, 1927 in Omaha, NE; the daughter of John "Ed" and Helen M. (Kasal) Kalhorn. She graduated from South High in Omaha, NE with the Class of 1945. She was united in marriage to Albert J. "Bud" Carrillo on April 22, 1955 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE.
She owned and operated Bee's Drive Inn on South 11th St. in Nebr. City for several years in the 1960s and 1970s. She served as the Secretary for the Nebraska City Coin Club. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Bee is survived by her husband Bud Carrillo of Nebr. City; three daughters: Diane James and husband Rich; Georgia Harrah and Mary Jo Gadeken and husband Jerry all of Nebr. City, NE; one son Bill Spire of Omaha, NE; 16 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Don Kalhorn and wife Bev of Omaha, NE and James Kalhorn and wife Linda of Rapid City, SD and other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Helen Henderson and son-in-law Wes Harrah both of Nebr. City.

Frank I. Crowner, age 67 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Univ. of NE Medical Center in Omaha, NE.
Frank was born on February 11, 1943 in Omaha, NE; the son of Shubert C. and Ottilia G. (Sims) Crowner. His family soon thereafter moved to Nebr. City and he graduated from Nebr. City High School with the class of 1961.
He was united in marriage to Janis G. Simonds on June 30, 1961 in Nebr. City. He joined the United States Air Force in September of 1961 and proudly served his country until August of 1965.
Frank attended 2 years of college, studying fire technology. He worked as a firefighter in El Paso, TX and then in Omaha, NE for 10 years. In his spare time Frank enjoyed fishing, golfing and bowling.

Michael K. Dankof, age 60 of Hamburg, IA passed away on May 19, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Grand Island, NE.
Michael was born on February 13, 1950 at Hamburg, IA; the son of Darrell "Danny" and Ruth (Moore) Dankof. He graduated from Hamburg High School with the class of 1968. He then entered the United States Navy and served his country from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam War.
Michael attended one year of college, studying water treatment. He then worked in water treatment plants in both California and Kansas City. He also worked at Manildra in Hamburg and as a security guard at Cargill in Nebr. City.
Michael is survived by his children James D. Dankof and wife Patricia of McAllister, OK; Bryan L. Dankof and fiancé Annie of East End Little Rock, AR and Amanda K. Cederstrom of Blue Springs, MO; step-son Chris More and wife Christina of Blue Springs, MO; his mother Ruth Dankof of Hamburg, IA; 2 step-grandchildren; siblings: Danny Dankof of St. Joseph, MO; Annette Thompson of Hamburg, IA and Mary Gail Lyons and husband Tom of Washington, IA and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell "Danny" Dankof on May 8, 1987; a nephew David Thompson in 2008; his grandparents and special friend Susan Petersen.
Memorial Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA; inurnment will follow the services. Complete military services will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion.

Robert Leo Schaeffer, son of Everett and Gertrude (Scoles) Schaeffer was born at rural Riverton, IA in the family farm home on July 7, 1926.
He attended school in Riverton and graduated from the Riverton High Schjool with the class of of 1944. After high school, he entered the US Army and faithfully served his country for two years returning home in 1946.
On January 22, 1947, he was united in marriage to Arlene L. Newman at Hamburg, IA and to this union two sons were born: Terry and Randy.
After marriage, he farmed and also worked for the local elevator for 30 years. After retiring, he enjoyed restoring old tractors and continued to help out around the farm. He was a member of the Riverton United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his beloved wife Arlene of rural Riverton, IA; sons: Terry Schaeffer and wife Mindy of Sidney, IA and Randy Schaeffer and wife Becky of Riverton, IA; two grandchildren: Lindsay and Alex; one great-grandson Owen; a sister Barbara Parkison of Rippey, IA; sister-in-law Dorlee Newman of Clarinda, IA; an uncle Glen Scoles of Winterset, IA; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA with the Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating; burial will follow in the Riverton Cemetery.

Georgia Rae Neemann was born on February 25, 1943 in Otoe County, NE; the daughter of Lena Raines. She was united in marriage to Marvin H. Neemann on September 21, 1958.
Georgia was a devoted wife and loving mother. Her grandkids were her biggest joy. She also enjoyed growing flowers. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Craig, MO.

Rodger G. Lant, MEMORIAL TRIBUTE
Age 65 of Nebraska City passed away on May 23, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Rodger Guy Lant was born on July 11, 1944 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Clifford D. and Valda M. (Pitzer) Lant. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1962 as Valedictorian.
Rodger worked in the Waste Water Plant of the Nebraska City Utilities for 27 years. He was on the Nebraska City Rescue Squad for 24 years; was a member of the Eagles and served on the Nebraska City High School Alumni Board.
He is survived by his children: Tina M. Phelps and fiancé David Leach of Nebr. City; Theresa K. DeMatteis and husband Mark of Seattle, WA; Cody R. Lant, Matthew G. Lant, Amanda S. Lant and Gregory R. Lant and wife Patricia all of Nebr. City; and Joe Thiesfeld and wife Cait of Kansas City, KS; two grandchildren: Michael & Austin; brothers: Cliff Lant and wife Bev of Lincoln, NE, Tom Lant and wife Diane and John Lant and wife Charlene all of Nebr. Charles E. "Ed" Mincer, age 87 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at The Ambassador in Sidney, IA.
Charles Edward Mincer was born on March 25, 1923 in rural Hamburg, IA near the present day Waubonsie State Park; the first child of Charles E. and Marcia M. (Forney) Mincer Sr. C.E. Mincer Sr. operated The Taylor Fruit Farm founded in 1890 and it was later named Mincer Orchard. Ed grew up on the family orchard. He was home schooled until he started Militia Hollow one room school house. He then stayed in Hamburg with his grandmother. He graduated Salutatorian of the class of 1941 from Hamburg High School.
From 1941 to 1948, Ed worked at his dad's orchard, took labor jobs in Nebraska and Minnesota and worked at Catron Orchard in Nebr. City. He then attended Peru State College starting in January of 1948. He graduated with a teaching certificate in July of 1949. He taught school at Essex, IA the fall of 1949 and the spring of 1950.
Ed was united in marriage to Greta Boettner of Rock Port, MO. They moved to Missouri to farm with John Boettner. Four children were born to this union: Gary, DiAnn, Craig and Kerry Sue.
Ed later married Edna Stalling on May 28, 1959 at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE and to this union two children were born: David and Martin Mincer. He farmed the Taylor Fruit Farm from 1958 until he sold it to his son David in 1996.
Ed started attending UNO in 1960 with the intent of advancing his teaching certificate. He began working more with the family orchard near Waubonsie State Park at that time, taking over the orchard operations from his father C.E. Mincer, Sr. He opened the Mincer Orchard retail location near Waubonsie State Park in 1960 with the help of Dick Teachout and erected the current structure on that location in 1976. He sold Mincer Orchard to Martin Mincer in 1998 and continued to raise strawberries until 2006.
Ed was a member of Kiwanis for over 32 years; he served on the Grape Community Hospital Board; was a member of the Masons for more than 60 years and was the Grand Marshal for the Popcorn Parade in 1996.
He is survived by his wife Edna Mincer of Hamburg, IA; children: Gary Mincer of Cape Canaveral, FL; Charles Craig Mincer and wife Connie of Lake Toxaway, NC; Kerry Sue Scardina and husband Jack of Omaha, NE; David Mincer and wife Beth of Hamburg, IA and Marty Mincer of Hamburg, IA; 8 grandchildren; son-in-law Mike Metz of Fairfield, IA; siblings Margaret Bryant and husband Tom and Darryl Mincer and wife Sarah all of Redding, CA; brother-in-law Walter Ursdevenicz of Omaha, NE and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter DiAnn Metz, a sister Lois Ursdevenicz and his parents.

Milton R. "Bob" Kreifels, age 80 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.
Milton Robert Kreifels was born on January 23, 1930 in Otoe County, NE; the son of Robert and Nora (Heng) Kreifels. Bob graduated from Nebraska City High School. He was united in marriage to Mary Esser on February 1, 1951 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebr. City, NE.
Bob spent his life doing what he loved, farming. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles.
Bob's life was a personal journey he shared with anyone who wanted to travel the path with him. He never missed an opportunity to graciously bestow kindness and help others. Throughout Bob's life he remained engaged, energetic and enthusiastic about his family, friends, and farming. When life presented challenges and obstacles, he accepted them. Bob knew happiness (particularly when it involved his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren) and was a man of character respected by those who knew him. Bob lived a good life, did what was right, and made life a little easier for others whenever he could by doing the things that mean so much. In his own way, he shared our joys and sorrows, and our successes and disappointments, and we couldn't ask for anything more. His life holds true meaning for us. Truly, one man can make a difference.

Kathleen G. "Kathy" Kahue, age 62 of Oakland, IA; formerly of Hamburg, IA passed away at her home on Friday; May 21, 2010.
She was born on July 25, 1947 in Albert Lea, MN; the daughter of Orven R. and Grace A. (Rosenau) Hansen. She attended school in New Richland, MN and graduated from the New Richland High School with the class of 1965.
Kathy moved to Oakland, IA from Hamburg in 1998. Prior to her move, she served as the City Clerk of Hamburg for many years. She currently worked for the Loess Hills Society and was a member of the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway Council. She was also a member of the Shade Makers Gardening Club and the Western Iowa Grape Growers Association. She was also very involved with the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Celebration.
She is survived by her three children: Nikki Albert and husband Jack of Tempe, AZ, Jodi Wiles and husband Corey of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Mike Becker and wife Mollee of Council Bluffs, IA; five grandchildren: Meredith Albert, Zachary and Maya Wiles, and Merric and McCain Becker; her mother Grace Hansen of La Crescent, MN; Brothers: Alan Hansen and wife Barb of Andover, MN and Dale Hansen and wife Judi of La Crescent, MN; other family and many friends.

Jerry was a painter for some 45 years. He took great pride in his work.

Hazel H. Vogel, age 98 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010 at the Tabor Manor in Tabor, IA.
Hazel Helen Zanker Vogel was born on July 21, 1911 in Atchison County, MO; the daughter of Charles and Mary Ann (Weste) Zanker. She graduated from Hamburg High School in May of 1929 and then attended Peru State Teachers College in Peru, NE for one year.
Hazel was united in marriage to Alton Glen Vogel on February 4, 1937 and to this marriage two children were born, David Charles and Judy. Hazel was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She worked at Stoner Drug for many years and was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hamburg for 82 years, joining in 1928.
She is survived by her children David C. Vogel and wife Bernice of Hamburg, IA and Judy Smith of Papillion, NE; four grandchildren: Quintin Smith, Chad Smith, Dennis Vogel and Jason Vogel; seven great-grandchildren; siblings: Paul Zanker and wife Carolyn and Ruby Nelson all of Hamburg, IA; and other family and friends.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Alton on October 17, 1984; her parents; siblings: Carl Zanker, Raymond Zanker, Harold Zanker and Hilda Hilger.

Robert "Bob" E. Schreiner, age 75 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City, NE.
Robert was born on September 27, 1934 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Eugene P. and Rose J. (Karmazin) Schreiner. He attended St. Bernard's Academy and graduated with the class of 1954. He served in the United States Army from March of 1957 thru Feb. of 1958.
Robert was united in marriage to Judith A. Finke on April 12, 1985 in Nebraska City, NE.
Bob worked 27 years for Novak Auto and 19 years for Viox Construction in Nebraska City. He volunteered for the Nebraska City Volunteer Fire Dept. for 50 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a life-time member of the Eagles.
Bob was a tireless worker. His favorite pastime was helping others. He was blessed by grandchildren in his later years and would not hesitate to talk about them whenever the opportunity arose. He put a lot of time into building the Nebr. City Volunteer Fireman's Museum and many other projects.
Robert is survived by his wife Judith A. Finke Schreiner of Nebr. City, NE; children: Kelly Schreiner of Omaha, NE; Kristin Lutz and husband Patrick of Omaha, NE; Robert J. Schreiner of Nebr. Sandy, age 59 of Nebraska City passed away on Thursday; April 13, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Sandy was born on October 27, 1950 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of J. Robert and Marjorie E. (Teten) Esser. Sandy attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1969. He entered the US Army on October 14, 1969 and was honorably discharged on August 27, 1971.
Sandy owned and operated the End Zone in Nebraska City for many years and Esser's Tavern in Nebr. City. He was one who loved his job and the many people he became friends with over the years. He was a very generous individual who always volunteered of his time and the business to help out with various projects including the Relay for Life and Veterans Day Luncheon to name a few. He was a member of the Eagles, the Elks and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Lois of Nebr. City; sons: Jason Esser and wife Kim of Nebr. City;

Roger M. Booker
Roger, a lifelong resident of Riverton, died at Grape Community Hospital on Monday, May 10th after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was raised by his grandfather Chance Parkison where he learned his valuable carpentry trade. Roger worked all of his life as a carpenter and cabinet maker and was well known for his knowledge and perfection of his trade throughout Fremont County. He was employed by Don Ricketts, Ray Walter and spent most of his employment with Lowell Sherwood of Sherwood Lumber. He was a civic minded individual who believed in serving his community. This included being elected to several terms to the Riverton City Council, serving several years as a member of the Riverton Fire Department, Board of Trustees of the Riverton United Methodist Church, Fremont County Eminent Domain committee, co-chair for the Fremont County Sesquicentennial, Riverton Cemetery Board, a member of Company E 168th Infantry Division and one of the driving forces for the Avenue of Flags posted each Memorial Day at Riverton's Cemetery to honor veterans. Many hours of his time were volunteered to projects such as the renovation of the Fox Shoe Store into a city hall and senior citizen center, roofing of the Chautauqua Park, all of the improvements made to the Riverton United Methodist Church which most recently included new siding and also remodeling the concession area now known as the R & R room at the Colonial Theater in Hamburg.
Roger was known as the historian for Riverton. If you needed any information about Riverton, he was the one to ask. Last summer he was featured in a documentary about life in the 1930's and 1940's. His many memories of the people and happenings of Riverton were heard by many. Roger enjoyed visiting with friends, gardening and in his later years going fishing, driving his convertible in parades, tinkering with his tractors getting the chance to go skydiving and taking the Border Raiders Bike Club on a hay ride to the Chautauqua Park.
Roger is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty, his daughter Sandy, his son Doug and wife Angel, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, several foster-care children and many friends. Roger was preceded in death by his grandfather Chance Parkison, grandmother Eva Parkison, grandson Justin Booker, mother- in law Helen Stacey, brother in-law Howard (Sonny) Girouex, sisters in-law Alice Apperson, Donna Mortimore and nephew David Girouex.

Mildred M. Lyerla, Memorial Tribute
Age 89 of Nebraska City passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at The Ambassador in Lincoln, NE.
Mildred was born on May 19, 1920 in Alto Pass, IL; the daughter of Everrett and Eva (Linsay) Baltzell. She was married to Loran Clifton Lyerla on November 2, 1938.
Mildred was a housewife and homemaker. After moving to Nebraska City in 1972, she worked in
the housekeeping department at St. Mary's Hospital for some eight years.
She is survived by two daughters: Sharon Amato and Janice Olis and husband Gordon all of Nebr. City, NE; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; siblings: Carl Baltzell of Cobden, IL; Imogene Fox of Alto Pass, IL and Edna Tellor of Carbondale, IL and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Clifton Lyerla in 2003 and a daughter Marilyn Kolito in 2004; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, NE with Jim Cummings - chaplain of Horizon Hospice officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday (5/10) at the mortuary.

Barbara M. Paris, age 66 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on May 2, 2010 at the Ambassador in Lincoln, NE.
Barbara was born on February 9, 1944 in Orange County, CA; the daughter of Virgil D. and Erma M. (Truax) Paris.
She was a custodian at Hayward School for 17 years. She helped with Kids Club and was a softball umpire. Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nebr. City.
She is survived by two daughters: Cindy Roemer and husband Daniel of Mt. Ayr, IA and Jenny Paris and significant other Jason Betts of Nebr. City, NE; brothers: Richard D. Paris and wife Ginger of Oakland City, IN and Francis Patrick Paris and wife Connie of Lincoln, NE and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

Larry G. Bailey, age 73 of Clarinda, IA passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, IA.
Larry was born on February 24, 1937 in rural Hamburg, IA; the son of Paul L. and Irma D. (Zach) Bailey. He attended Country School and the graduated from Hamburg High School with the class of 1955. He also attended Tarkio College for one year. Larry served his country in the National Guard for 8 years.
Larry was united in marriage to Norma L. Strange on October 19, 1970 in Rock Port, MO.
He was a farmer most of his life. He also worked for the Page County Road Department for 16 years before retiring in March of 1999. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Larry is survived by his wife, Norma Bailey of Clarinda, IA; son Tracy Bailey of Shenandoah, IA; 3 step-children: Donald Kalkas and wife Mary of Shenandoah, IA; Frances Hagey and husband Gary of Clarinda, IA and Terry Culbertson and fiancé Darryl Larson of Blanchard, IA; 5 step- grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren; 4 brothers-in-law: Floyd Strange and wife Donna of Essex, IA; Jim Strange of Sidney, IA; David Strange and wife Sharon of Randolph, IA and Allen Strange and wife Joy of Randolph, IA and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife's parents and a sister-in-law Phyllis Runyon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010 at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA with the Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating; burial to follow in the Riverton Cemetery.

Leland A. Petersen, MEMORIAL TRIBUTE
Age 87 of Talmage, NE passed away on Wednesday evening, April 14, 2010 at his home.
Leland Arthur Petersen was born on November 8, 1922 on a farm near Cook, NE; the son of Ervin E. and Lydia P. (Schrader) Petersen. He graduated from Talmage High School with the class of 1940. He then served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He entered service on Jan. 5, 1944 and was honorably discharged on April 15, 1946. He served in the South Pacific, the Asian Theater, Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
Leland was united in marriage to Ruth B. Kroll on October 21, 1952 at Holy Rosary Church in St. Mary, NE. He was a longtime farmer near Talmage. He was a dedicated father and husband. One of his favorite hobbies was embroidering. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church where he was a Lector for many years. He also belonged to the Talmage American Legion, V.F.W. and the U.S.S. L.C.S. 53 Navy Club.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Ruth B. Petersen of Talmage, NE; children: Dennis Petersen; Brenda Brolhorst and husband Robert; Doreen Freeman; Kevin Petersen and wife Edie and Lynette Von Minden and husband Kurt all of Lincoln, NE; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his stillborn son Stephen, grandson Ryan Brolhorst, son-in-law Joe Freeman in 2008; sister Margy Dierking, brother Raymond Petersen and his parents. .
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church south of Nebr. City, NE with Fr. Thomas Bush officiating; burial will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with complete Military Honors by Talmage American Legion Post 246 and U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail.
There will be a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at Gude Mortuary followed by the family greeting friends.

Nathan Lee Gammell-Lang, infant son of Jennifer Kay Gammell and Adam Lee Lang passed away on April 14, 2010 at Children‘s Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Nathan was born at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE on April 12, 2010.
He is survived by his mother Jennifer Kay Gammell and father Adam Lee Lang both of Hamburg, IA; a half-brother Hunter Lang; maternal grandparents Cindy Gammell and fiancé Richard Gregg of Hamburg, IA; Larry Gammell and wife Debra of Sidney, IA; paternal grandparents Claude and Shelly Lang of Hamburg, IA; great-grandparents Donna Overman of Hamburg, IA; Kenneth and Ruby Gammell of Sidney, IA; Clarice Lang of Hamburg, IA and Enos and Marge Nelson of Council Bluffs, IA.
He was preceded in death by great-grandparents Donald Overman, Claude Lang, Sr. and Violet Nelson.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Hamburg, IA; burial will follow the services.

Randal J. "Randy" Roup, age 54 of Sidney, IA (formerly Hamburg) passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.
Randal was born on May 8, 1955 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Edmund J. and Patricia L. (Bradley) Roup, Jr. He attended school in Hamburg and graduated with the class of 1973. He then attended University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Randy drove truck for many years and hauled livestock. After encountering health problems, he was forced to give up truck driving. He then went to work for the City of Hamburg and later for the City of Sidney. In addition to these jobs, he also did many part time jobs in and around the community. He served as secretary for the Sons of American Legion and was very active with the Sidney, IA Rodeo.
He is survived by two daughters Erica Roup of Lincoln, NE and Jenna Lewis of Clinton, KY; his mother Patricia Casey of Mesa, AZ; siblings: Jim Roup and wife Cathy of Rock Port, MO; Kelly Williams and husband David of Florence, AZ and Cindy Roup of Gilbert, AZ; nephews: Cody and Jared Williams, Christopher, Cory and Colby Roup; niece Cassandra Williams and two great-nieces: Keira and Olivia Roup; other family and many friends.
Randal was preceded in death by his father in 1977; brother David in 1992 and step-father Bill Casey in 2005.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 9, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA with Fr. Vern Smith officiating; burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Hamburg, IA.

Darlene was born on October 18, 1941 in Watson, MO; the daughter of Cecil Raymond and Mamie Ella (Wooten) Price. She attended school in Watson and Rock Port, MO and at Hamburg, IA. She was united in marriage to DeWayne A. Nesiba on March 12, 1960 in Hamburg, IA.
Darlene worked for many years at St. Mary's Hospital and the Nebraska City Manor. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother to her three children.
She is survived by her husband DeWayne Nesiba of Nebr. City, NE; children Michael Nesiba and wife Elizabeth of Henderson, NV; Sue Ann Sellon and husband Paul of Nebr. City, NE and David Nesiba of Nebr.
