Opal M. Sweet

Age 86, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Opal was born on May 21, 1925 in Douglas, NE; the daughter of George and Jessa (Allen) Carter. She graduated from Douglas High School with the Class of 1943 and the attended UNL Business College for 1 year.

Opal was united in marriage to Lawrence Sweet on February 11, 1956 in Lincoln, NE. He preceded her in death in September of 1972.

She was a Purchasing Agent for the City of Lincoln in the 1940's and a Dance Instructor for Arthur Murray's Dance Studio in the 1950's. She then worked as a Bookkeeper for Alco until her retirement in 2001. After her retirement she helped with the lunch program at the Nebraska City Public Schools. She was a former member of the Eastern Star.

Opal is survived by her children Randy Sweet and significant other Karen Mikkelsen of Nebr. City and Diana Beason of Lincoln, NE; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and one brother Donald Carter of Ann Arbor, MI and other family and friends.

In addition to her husband Lawrence, she was preceded in death by two brothers, five sisters and one grandson.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2012 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Sara Malone officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gude Mortuary on Thursday (2/2) evening.

Elfrieda Alvina Doeden Gawart

Age 93, of Nebraska City, NE passed on January 30, 2012 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City, NE.

Elfrieda was born July 21, 1918, in Douglas, Nebraska, to Doede Jacob Doeden and Emma Anna Halm Doeden, the youngest of their ten children. She was baptized at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Osage Township north of Cook, Nebraska, and confirmed there in 1931.
 

She was the valedictorian of her 1936 class at Cook High School, Cook, Nebraska. She then attended Peru State Teachers College for one year. With her one year certificate in hand Elfrieda taught for three years at District 80 and 1 year at District 49 near Cook.

On May 28, 1941, she was united in marriage to John Everett Gawart. They made their home in Nebraska City until he enlisted in the Army. Elfrieda then took a job as the timekeeper at the Martin Bomber Plant at Fort Crook, Nebraska, until the war ended. During her work there she observed the Enola Gay being built which hastened the end of WW II.

Elfrieda and John had three children: Sheryl Kay, Margaret Ann, and John Paul.

Elfrieda returned to teaching north of Dunbar in 1957 for one year, then moved to the Dunbar School for three years. In 1961 Elfrieda received her bachelor's degree from Peru State College and in 1968 her master's degree from the University of Nebraska.
She retired from teaching third grade in the Nebraska City Public School system in 1983. She was a life member of the National Education Association and the Nebraska State Education Association. She was also a faithful member of Bethel United Church of Christ for over fifty years. She taught Sunday School for numerous years and enjoyed Women's Fellowship, the retired teachers' organization, her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband John on 2004, her parents, all nine brothers and sisters: Theodore Doeden, Louise Panko, Dora Wellensiek, Bertha Holscher, Alvina Fritzemeyer, Arnold Doeden, Paul Doeden, Marie Damme, and a stillborn sister; two granddaughters: Elizabeth Ann Gawart and Sarah Margaret Sanders Woolery; and a son-in-law, C. N. Sanders.

Surviving are her children: Sheryl and special friend Dave Welchans, Margaret Brust and husband John, son John and wife Kathy, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and loving friend and caregiver Jane Maybee.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Bethel United Church of Christ with Rev. Rodger Good officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday (2/1) evening at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebr. City.

James F. Ryan

Age 90, of Nebraska City, NE died January 26, 2012 at Duff's Friendship Villa. He moved to Nebraska City with his wife, Jacqueline, in 2002 after living for many years in North Platte, Nebraska.

He was born on February 17, 1921 in Heartwell, NE to William F. Ryan and Marguerite F. (Pantenburg) Ryan. His family moved to North Platte when he was eight years old. He graduated from North Platte St. Patrick's High School in 1938.

He married Jacqueline on February 8, 1943 and shared over 68 years with her until her death May 7, 2011. The couple had eight children.

He was a World War II Veteran and served in the Army in England. He also worked on the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman and conductor for over 47 years in North Platte. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

He is survived by his children: Linda Lutz (husband Larry) of Parker, CO; Timothy Ryan (wife Mary Jo) of North Platte; Patrick Ryan of Grants, New Mexico; Theresa Ryan of Goodyear, Arizona; Elaine Lehmkuhler (husband Paul) of Dodge City, KS; Janet O'Neil (husband Scott) of Dunbar, Nebraska; Christina Reitz (husband Daniel) of Eagle River, Alaska; and Carrie Brown (husband Evan) of North Platte. There are also 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two brothers: Bernard Ryan (wife Victoria) of Paris, TX and Donald Ryan (wife Velma) of North Platte; one sister: Eleanor Janulaw (husband John) of Los Angeles, California; numerous nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Graveside interment services will be held on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 2, at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, NE at 1:30 p.m.

There will be a Rosary Tuesday evening, January 31, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City. The family will greet friends prior to the Rosary starting at 6:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Lourdes School Expansion Project or the North Platte American Legion.

Leola Sophie Caroline (Grummert) Kreimer

Leola was born on February 18, 1916 to Carl and Lizzie (Schlake) Grummert in Plymouth, NE. She grew up on a farm and attended a one room school through the 8th grade. She worked as a hired girl for several families in the area. Leola moved to Lincoln in 1936 and found work as a second cook at a sorority. She came to Talmage in Oct of 1938 to work in a cafe.

Leola was married to Arnold G Kreimer on Sept. 10, 1940 at Peace Lutheran Church, Plymouth, NE. They were married 47 years and were blessed with 4 children. Leola worked at Kreimer's Store with her husband, Arnold for 35 years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she belonged to the Paula Ruth Circle, Dorcas Circle, and Quilting Circle (serving as chairman of the quilting circle for 53 years) and also served in other areas. She was active in the Talmage community serving in the Chamber of Commerce and American Legion Auxiliary (volunteering at the Veteran's Hospital for many years).

Leola loved quilting, blessing each of her children, grandchildren and most of her great-grandchildren with one. She also enjoyed playing cards, belonging to pinochle and bridge clubs over the years. Due to health issues, she moved to Duffs Friendship Villa in November of 2008. Leola passed peacefully on January 25, 2012 at the age of 95.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Delmar Grummert, husband Arnold and son-in-law Harold Tysseland.

Leola is survived by her children Anita Tysseland (Cupertino, CA), Dale Kreimer (St. Charles, MO), Dennis (Michele) Kreimer (Racine, WI), Kristine (Richard) Smith (Vicksburg, MS), 16 grand children, 13 great grand children, her brother Vernon (Verneal) Grummert, nieces and nephews.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Anita's family is Ann (Mike) St. John [Nathanael, Max, Annaliese, Isabelle & Ethan], Kiersten (Shawn) Dube [David, Alia & Aaron], Jennifer (Kurt) Grosskopf and Julie Ruel; Dennis and Michele's family is Nicole (Rodney) Offield [Tyler & Zachary], Tiffany (A J) Cacciotti [Collin, Cole & Cooper] and Ryan; Kristine and Richard's family is Laura, Kimberly, Richard Jr., Caleb, Elizabeth, Anna, Bethany, Daniel and Faith.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday; January 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage, NE with Pastor Glatha Rathjen officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Paul's Cemetery near Talmage, NE.

The family will greet friends Friday (Jan. 27) from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage, NE.

Memorials may be given to the Talmage Rescue or the American Legion Post #246 Community Building Fund.

Patty M. (Plympton) Cody

Age 48, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

She was born Patricia Mae Plympton on June 26, 1963 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Ivan Andrew and Carol Mae (Runkles) Plympton. She attended elementary school in Dunbar and later attended high school at Syracuse, NE graduating with the class of 1981.

Patty was married to Dan Baker on January 22, 1983 in Peru, NE and to this union two children were born:  Scott and Sheena. She later married Jerry Cody on December 28, 1995 in Nebraska City, NE.

She worked at American Meter Company in Nebraska City and also at the Kwik Shop. For the last 13 years, she was a licensed daycare provider providing love and care in her home to numerous children. Patty was an avid BINGO player.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Cody of Nebr. City; two children: Scott A. Baker of Bellevue, NE and Sheena M. Ammon and husband Jamie of Lincoln, NE; step-children: Tara Staub and husband Roger of North Carolina and Chad Cody and wife Tana of Shenandoah, IA; five grandchildren: Taven and Landen Baker, Lillian Frields, Summer Godsey and Brooklyn Ammon; six step-grandchildren: Tarren, Nevaeh, Dakota, Taylor, Tyler and Dominick; her mother Carol Plympton of Nebr. City; brothers: Steve Plympton and special friend Laurie Drake of Lincoln, NE; Robert Plympton and wife Dawn of Auburn, NE; other family and many,
many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father Ivan Plympton on July 25, 1979 and her sister Sharron Kay Greene on December 18, 2008.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2012 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebr. City with Rev. Lynn Parsons officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.

Visitation is open from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with the family greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The casket will remain closed on Monday at the church prior to
the services.

Innis M. "Tiny" Gardner,

Age 88 of Riverton, IA passed away on Saturday morning; January 14, 2012 at
Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City.

Innis Marie (Brown) Gardner was born on October 13, 1923 in Hamburg, IA; the daughter of Ray Monroe and Addie Josephine (Smith) Brown. She was united in marriage to Arnold Gardner on December 14, 1947 in Sidney, IA.

Innis and Arnold made their home in Riverton for many years. She was a housewife and homemaker and a loving wife and mother.

She is survived by her two daughters: Christie Bassinger of Nebraska City, NE and Addie Sears and husband John of Oklahoma City, OK; seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold in 2009, her daughter Marsha Gernand in 2006, son-in-law Dwight Gernand in 2006; a great-grandson in 2010, a brother Phillip Brown and a infant brother.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning (Jan. 17) at 11:00 a.m. at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA with Pastor Terry Duffy of the Nebraska City Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverton Cemetery.

Fredrick A. Wellsandt

Fredrick A. Wellsandt, age 87, of Talmage, NE passed away on Thursday morning, January 12, 2012 at Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebraska City, NE.

He was born on January 2, 1925 in the family home near Talmage, NE; the son of Fred and Frieda (Vollertsen) Wellsandt. After attending County School District #106, he began farming at a very young age; a job that he truly loved. Since farming was his greatest interest, he started at an early age and continued until the age of 83. He enjoyed raising cattle, hogs and sheep. In his earlier years he drove trucks for Harold Morris.

He was united in marriage to Gladys M. Nebelsick on June 11, 1952 at the McWilliams United Church of Christ at rural Talmage, NE and to this union three children were born: Mary Ann, Darrel and Colleen. Mary Ann preceded him in death as an infant. He was baptized, confirmed and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He served on the church council and he served as caretaker for St. Paul’s Cemetery for many years. He was also a former member of the Nebraska City Eagles and Elks.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gladys Wellsandt of Talmage, NE; children Darrel Wellsandt and Colleen Wellsandt both of Talmage, NE; sisters-in-law Norma Wellsandt and Phyllis Wellsandt both of Syracuse, NE, brother-in-law Ervin Nebelsick of Heber City, UT; numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

In addition to his infant daughter Mary Ann, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Delbert Wellsandt and Eldon Wellsandt.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage, NE with Pastor Glatha Rathjen officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery northeast of Talmage.

The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday (1/15) at the Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage.

Anita "Irene" Williams

Age 74, of Peru, NE (formerly Talmage, NE) passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at her home.

Irene was born on June 4, 1937 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Frank and Elsie (Kleineweber) Bassinger. She was united in marriage to Richard L. Williams on February 7, 1956 in Nebraska City, NE and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1994.

Irene worked at the Syracuse Community Hospital in Syracuse, NE for some 35 years as the Central Supply Technician. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She is survived by sons: Merlyn Williams and wife Mary; Phillip "David" Williams and wife Mary all of Nebr. City, NE and daughter: Cathy Castner and husband Arnold "Butch" of Peru, NE; 12 grandchildren: Matt Williams, Leslie Kaster and husband Bill; Samantha Grobler and husband Corius; Lance Barnes; Amber Huffman; Kacie Huffman; Travis Castner and wife Nicole; Amy Daniels; Justin Williams; Kattie Pieken; Jacob Williams and Donnie Roberts; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: Lucille Teegarden of Nebr. City, NE and Jim Bassinger and wife Lois of Nebr. City, NE and other family and friends and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters: Sedona Shefferd, Ruby Conrad and Arwilda Bennett.

Phillip C. Barrett

Age 51, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2012 at his home.

Phillip was born on December 16, 1960 in Hamburg, IA; the son of Billy and Edna Josephine (Buttermore) Barrett. He attended school in Hamburg and graduated from the Hamburg High School with the Class of 1979. He was married to Karla J. Peters on April 1, 1984 in Sidney, IA.

He is survived by his children Kayla Barrett of Hamburg, IA; Krystle Barrett of Syracuse, NE and Karrie York of Fairbury, NE; seven grandchildren; two brothers William A. Barrett and wife Jacqueline and Jeffrey B. Barrett and wife Suzanne all of Hamburg, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other family and friends.

Phillip worked for Terry Holliman for many years including at the NAPA Parts Store.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandparents: Andrew and Beulah Barrett and Ruby Buttermore.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA. Greg Green, best friend of Phillip will officiate at the celebration.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at Mt. Olive Cemetery in rural Hamburg. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Haughton, Johnny Hayes, Luke and Matt Barrett. Jayme Anderson will attend the Memorial Book for the services.

Doris J. Stitt

Age 80 of Nebraska City passed away on Saturday; January 7, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born on August 27, 1931 at Cozad, NE; the daughter of William Arthur and Eliza Jane (Druery) Nichelson. She was united in marriage to Karl F. Neumeister on March 7, 1952 at Nebraska City, NE. She later married Jack D. Stitt on November 20, 2003 at Tarkio, MO.

During her working years, she worked and cooked at various restaurants. Most recently, Doris cooked for her son Floyd and daughter in law Anne at Farbke Bowling in Nebraska City. She was also the Cook at Mom's Café in Plattsmouth, NE for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City and a former member of the Plattsmouth Eagles Auxiliary. She was baptized on April 29, 1984 at the First United Methodist Church in Plattsmouth;
a day that she was very proud of.

She is survived by her five children: Karl Neumeister and wife Jean of Nehawka, NE, Roy Neumeister and wife Brenda of Avoca, NE, Del Neumeister and wife Susan of Belle Fourche, SD, Kay Neumeister of Nebr. City and Floyd Neumeister and wife Anne of Nebr. City; 25 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; sister Donna Landercasper of Scottsbluff, NE; brothers: Ron Nichelson of Gothenburg, NE and Harley Nichelson and wife Mary of Eustis, NE; an uncle Boyd Meredith of North Platte, NE; other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack; two brothers Ivan and John Nichelson and three infant siblings.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning (Jan. 11) at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in the Rock Bluff Cemetery near Beaver Lake. Pallbearers will be grandchildren Kyle, Brandon, Eric, Kevin, Nathan and Kathy Jo Neumeister and Angelia Fithian.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening (Jan. 10) at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Donald Fay "Tiny" Morrical

Age 70 of Tabor, IA passed away on December 31, 2011 at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln, NE.

He was born on September 21, 1941 in Glenwood, IA; the son of Fay Daniel and Dorothy Phyllis (Ballenger) Morrical. After attending school he joined the National Guard in 1963. He was decorated Expert M-14 Riffle award. Last duty assignment was Ft Jackson, SC. He served his duty as assigned and was honorably discharged. He also was enrolled in and received a diploma from the Humbolt Institute of Air Line and Traffic Management.

Tiny was married to Connie Lou Cheney and she preceded him in death in 1993. In addition to his wife Connie, he was preceded in death by a sister Wanda Lou Morrical in 1939 at the age of one year and a half-sister Edna Osbahr in 1956 at the age of 26 years.

He worked at Swift Packing House in Glenwood, IA for many years. He also was an avid horseman and worked with horse throughout his life. He raised, trained, broke and shoed horses for many years and during this time developed many, many friendships.

He is survived by his son Jeff Morrical and Lisa of Malvern, IA; a step-daughter Jeanne McMillen and husband Duncan of Acwork, GA; three grandchildren: Corey, Ashley and Keira; three great-grandchildren: a sister Mardene Miller of Bennington, NE; other family and many friends.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7) at 2:00 p.m. at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA. Inurnment will follow in the Riverton Cemetery also at Riverton, IA.

Carol J. Wellensiek,

Age 75, of rural Dunbar, NE passed away early Monday, January 2, 2012 at her home.

Carol was born on February 23, 1936 in Platteville, WI to Henry and Florence (Woods) Reisen, the 11th of 12 children. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and also working as a waitresses from Dubuque, IA to Gretna, NE. As a mother, she not only helped her children but helped the neighbors just as much. Many called her mom.

Carol married Roger Wellensiek on July 14, 1989 in Gretna, NE. They moved to their current home near Dunbar in 1996 and began Roger's Garden. Carol was the chief jelly and jam maker when selling at farmer's markets.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Roger Wellensiek of Dunbar, NE; children: Wanda Barauskas of Dunbar, NE; Laura Elly of Omaha, NE; James Tapp of Pahrump, NV; Allen Tapp and wife Jessica of Rock Hill, SC; Phillip Tapp and wife Jodi of Omaha, NE and step son Scott Wellensiek of Cheyenne, WY; brothers: Charles Reisen and wife Linda and Clarence Reisen both of Dubuque, IA; sister: Margeret Utiger of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law: Jennette Reisen of Kansas City, MO and Nancy Reisen of Darlington, WI; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012 at Christ Lutheran Church (Delaware) at Rural Syracuse, NE with Pastor Glatha Rathjen officiating. Burial will be held in St. John's UCC Church Cemetery (McWilliams) at rural Dunbar, NE following the funeral lunch.

Darold D. Abbott, Sr.

Age 83 of Elmwood, NE, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2011 at the Louisville Care Center in Louisville, NE.

Darold was born on July 12, 1928 in Union, NE to Adrian A. and Nora I. (Jones) Abbott. After attending school he served in the United States Air Force during WWII. He entered on Sept. 16, 1946 and was honorably discharged on June 24, 1949.

He was united in marriage to Janice Swanson on April 22, 1950 in Sidney, IA. He worked at Western Sand & Gravel as a Shop Foreman for 20 years. In addition, he worked at Conky's Mill and Wademan Distributing Co.

He is survived by his wife of sixty one years Janice Abbott of Elmwood, NE; eight children: Michael Abbott and wife Deborah; Darold Abbott Jr. and wife Tamara; Diane Poole and husband Theodore "Kipper" all of Ashland, NE; Patricia Gruber and husband Steven of Manley, NE; Peggy Tweedy and husband Robert of Crofton, NE; Debra Pike and husband Dennis of La Vista, NE; Lori Lawton of Syracuse, NE and Julie Sawyer and husband Bradley of Omaha, NE; 25 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson; 2 sisters: Wanda Barrett of Nebraska City, NE and Eleanor "Vernie" Eblem and husband Ray of Camden, MO and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Allen J. Abbott; son-in-law Steven "Scotty" Lawton; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; six brothers and one sister.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City; inurnment will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City. with military honors conducted by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Dana Arlene Brown Nahkunst,

Age 86 of Hamburg, IA passed away peacefully at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA on December 29, 2011.

Dana was born on March 6, 1925 at the old Hamburg Hospital to Maureen K. (McMunn) and Hubert L. Brown.

Dana attended elementary school through 8th grade at Sunnyside Country School. She went on to attend Hamburg High School graduating with the Class of 1941. After attending two years of college at the University of Iowa, Dana transferred to Simpson College in Indianola, IA graduating in 1947 with a BA degree in education.

On March 14, 1948, Dana was united in marriage to Robert E. Nahkunst. This union was blessed with three children, Gary, Kathy and Jim. She was a loving, and caring wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.

Dana taught school for 10 years in Mt. Ayr, Sidney and Hamburg before leaving education to raise her family. She returned to teaching in 1966 and taught in Union, NE for one year before teaching 24 years at Northside Elementary School in Nebraska City, NE and retiring in 1991. Dana taught different grades but 2nd grade was always her favorite. Dana lived most of her life on the family farm which has been in the family since 1854.

Dana loved to read books especially those written by Danielle Steele. Dana also enjoyed traveling the country on bus trips.

Those left to honor her memory are her children, Gary Nahkunst of Hamburg, IA; Kathy (Joe) Bell of Indianola, IA and Jim (Carla) Nahkunst of Hamburg, IA; grandchildren: Colin Nahkunst, Bradley Nahkunst, Alisha (Matt) Seeley, Clayton Bell and Marcus Ferry; great-grandchildren: Lilliana Seward and Nash Seeley and other family and friends.

Preceding Dana in death are her parents, Hubert and Maureen Brown, husband Robert E. Nahkunst and grandson Andrew Bell.

Viewing will be available from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday (1/1/2012) at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA (new location).

Visitation with the family will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. until service time at the United Methodist Church in Hamburg, IA with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Rural Hamburg, IA.

Carl Rose, 

Age 95 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Wednesday; December 28, 2011 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA.

Robert Carl Rose was born on September 17, 1916 at rural Hamburg, IA; one of three children of
Robert Ernest and Sophie Fredericke Alvina (Driever) Rose. He attended country school and later attended the Hamburg High School.

He was united in marriage to Esther Mae Miller on November 21, 1943 in Hamburg, IA and to this union four children were born: Robert, Peggy, David and Susan.

Carl was a long-time farmer and he also worked for Colbert Excavation in Nebraska City for over 10 years. He was a long-time member of the United Trinity Church in Hamburg.

He is survived by his children: Robert Rose of Sidney, IA, Peggy Rose of Nebr. City, NE, David Rose and wife Linda of New Market, IA and Susan Tomlyn and husband Tim of Nebr. City; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister in law Ruth Nook of Hamburg and brother in law Ralph Miller of Hamburg; cousin Robert Rose of Riverton, IA; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife on July 24, 1998; daughter in law Toni Rose and two sisters Louise and Marie.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning (12/31) at 11:00 a.m. at the United Trinity Church in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Dan Voigt officiating. Burial will follow in the Hamburg Cemetery.

Viewing will be on Friday from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home's new location at 1220 Main St.; Hamburg, IA. Viewing will also be an hour prior to the services at the church.

Dorothy E. Ramold

Age 83, of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at her home.

Dorothy was born on October 13, 1928 in Shepherd, Montana; the daughter of Frank and Anna (Ulmschneider). She attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from St. Bernard's in 1946.

Dorothy was a Medical Record Librarian at St. Mary's Hospital for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a dedicated member of their choir.

She is survived by a brother Clarence Ramold and wife Theresa of Omaha, NE; two sisters: Irene Meister of Wall Lake, IA and Barbara Schulte and husband John of Casper, WY; nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Sister Ann Louise and an infant brother.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City. Dorothy will be cremated following the services and inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Nebr. City.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (12/30) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Howard W. McCord

Age 91, of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City, NE.

He was born Howard Weldon McCord on March 17, 1920 south of Nebraska City, NE; one of three sons of Israel Guy and Nannie Elizabeth (Witty) McCord. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the class of 1938.

He entered the US Navy on November 12, 1941 and served on various battleships during World War II in the South Pacific. He served as admiral's writer to Admiral Willis A. Lee.  He was honorably discharged from the Navy on November 9, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Florence Marie Jones on October 18, 1947 in Nebraska City and the couple shared
over 64 years of marriage together.

Howard worked at various places including Hancock Farm Equipment in Herman, NE, Novak Auto - where he was the bookkeeper for 16 years, Clemmy Holmes Auto, and the Nebraska Unemployment Division. He also worked on construction building roads and power plants including the OPPD Plant southeast of Nebraska City.
Following his retirement, he worked at Kimmel Orchard.

He is survived by his wife Florence McCord of Nebr. City; two children James D. McCord and wife Wanda of Nebr. City and Elizabeth McCord Bishop of Lincoln, NE; six grandchildren: Aaron, Victoria, Justin, and Miranda McCord and Jonathan and Matthew Bishop and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law Donald A. Bishop and two brothers: Ralph E.McCord and Lloyd W. McCord.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with complete military services conducted by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening (12/21) at the mortuary.

Barbara C. (Polk) Shull

Barbara Claire (Polk) Shull was born on June 25, 1923 at the family farm near Sidney, Iowa to Wayne Worden Polk and Naomi Merle Howard (Polk). She attended and graduated from Sidney, Iowa High School in 1941. She was chosen Sidney Iowa Rodeo Queen in 1940. Attending the Rodeo was a highlight of eac summer and she was able to attend for 87 years missing only one year when her husband was overseas.

Barbara taught in a rural one room school in Fremont County. On February 8, 1942 she was married to Benjamin Hensel Shull of Riverton, Iowa. Upon her husband enlisting in the Coast Guard, she was able to join him at his assignments until he was transferred overseas to the Pacific Theater of World War II. She then moved to Omaha and worked at the Martin Bomber Plant.

Barbara spent her life as a homemaker, mother, credit manager and 25 years as office manager at Dr. Dean Ray's Dental Clinic in Shenandoah, Iowa. She assisted her husband at the Shull Funeral Home for many years.

Barbara passed away on December 18, 2011 at Pleasant View care Center in Rock Port, Missouri surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was active in the Riverton United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, directing children's choirs, and was active in United Methodist Women. She was a member of Sorosis Federated Club, Eastern Star, 4-H club leader, Riverton Community Club, Riverton Silver and Gold Club, Fremont County Historical Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, father, mother, sister Mary Nenneman, brother Charles Polk, and son-in-law Dr. Roger H. Henderson.

She is survived by children: Pamela Jean Henderson of Rock Port, Missouri; Patricia Janice Denson and husband Robert J. of Ankeny, Iowa; Michael Wayne Shull of Chillicothe, Missouri; grandchildren: Eric Henderson and wife Arima; Timothy Henderson and wife Carrie of Papillion, Nebraska; Kent Henderson and wife Cheryl of Fremont, Nebraska; Robyn Denson of Gig Harbor, Washington; J. Clifford Denson and wife Jenny of Merritt Island, Florida; Phillip Shull and wife Diann of Columbia, Missouri; Kara Shull of Dallas, Texas and Benjamin C. Shull of Chillicothe, Missouri.

Great-grandchildren: Logan, Elinor, and Kady Henderson; Emmalee, Hannah and Noelle Henderson; Kacey and Truett Denson Dupuis; Brooks and Anna Denson; Allyson, Malachi, and Zoey Shull; sisters Mildred Elliott of Topeka, Kansas and Bonnie Brown and husband Leland of Clarinda, Iowa as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.

Barb loved art, music and enjoyed traveling, but her greatest love was her family. She loved them and they loved her back.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday morning (12/22) at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA with Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverton Cemetery.

Age 84, of Nebraska City died December 9, 2011 at home with her family.

She was born October 1, 1927 to Hugh Allen and Cleda Fern Best in North Bend, Nebraska and married Glen E Cohn on August 20, 1954 at Nebraska City, NE.

She is survived by her husband, Glen E Cohn of Nebraska City, NE, sons Jay C. Cohn and wife Debra of Lenexa, KS, Glen E Cohn Jr. of Watson, MO, Gary A Cohn and wife Teralyn of Sedgwick, KS, William D Cohn and wife Brenda J of Lincoln, NE, and Chad L. Cohn and wife Tammy of Waverly, NE, as well as the treasures of her life, grandchildren Kimberly and Aaron, Kindl and Keenan, Hillary and James, Megan and Matthew, and Jared; great grandchild Anden, one brother, Bob Best of Omaha, NE, sister Beverly Snyder of North Bend, NE and many friends.

Shirley grew up and received her education in North Bend where she graduated in 1945 as class valedictorian. She worked at Omaha Athletic Club until she married. They had 57 wonderful years together raising their family.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a daughter, Jacene L, three sisters Janet, Kathryn, Marjorie and a brother Floyd.

Shirley will be cremated and no services will be held. She will be laid to rest at a later date in Wyuka Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to Susan G Komen Foundation in care of Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Rosa P. Frede

Age 91; formerly of Nebraska City passed away on Sunday; December 11, 2011 at The Gretna Community Living Center in Gretna, NE.

She was born on April 29, 1920 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Ernest and Anna (Hundrup) Glockel. She was one of seven children in the family.

She was united in marriage to Herbert F. Frede on June 19, 1940 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE. He preceded her in death on December 24, 1983.

Rosa was a long-time member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. She was a housewife and homemaker and also worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebr. City as a Nurses Aid.

She is survived by her six children: Annette Twiford and significant other Ray of Bellevue, NE; Leo Frede and wife Betty of rural Sidney, IA; Betty Plumer and husband Steve of Lenexa, KS; Barbara Kinsella and husband Dan of Omaha, NE; Leonard Frede of Lincoln, NE and Pamela Frede of Gretna, NE; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son Leslie and six siblings.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning (12/13) at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Lyle Johnson celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Benedict's Cemetery.

The casket will remain closed at the request of the family.

Naomi M. Schomerus,

Age 79 of Nebraska City passed away on Thursday; Dec. 8, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City.

She was born on January 21, 1932 at Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Edward Anton and Gertrude Marie (Harris) Wirth. She attended school and graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the class of 1949.

She was united in marriage to Donald L. Schomerus on April 21, 1954 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City, and to this union three sons were born: John, Ronald and Kevin.

In her early years, Naomi worked as bookkeeper for Jack Windle. She later worked as Deputy County Assessor at the Otoe County Courthouse. Following her marriage, she became a stay at home mom tending
To the needs of her family. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers,
Catholic Daughters, the Paul Extension Club and the Pinochle Club. She was also a long-time member of
St. Mary's Church Choir.

She is survived by her husband Donald Schomerus of Nebr. City; sons: John Schomerus and friend Patrick Murphy of Lincoln, NE; Ronald Schomerus and wife Diane of Nebr. City and Kevin Schomerus and wife Liz of Nebr. City; Five grandchildren: Justin, Garrett, Jordan, Jessica and Melissa Schomerus; brother Leon Wirth of Omaha, NE; sisters: Ruth Pfeiffer and husband Bob of Nebr. City and Velda Kreifels and husband Leroy of Nebr. City; brother-in-law Basil Wenzel formerly of Nebr. City; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother Robert Wirth and his wife Polly, sister Bernice Wenzel and sister-in-law Evelyn Wirth.

Funeral Services will be held Monday morning (Dec. 12) at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

the family receiving friends.

Carl William Frakes

Age 81, passed away Dec. 7, 2011 in Lake Havasu City, AZ. He was born in Falls City , NE on July 7, 1930; the son of Charles and Della Mae (Dillman) Frakes.

Carl and Mary Ann were married for 41 years and have resided in Lake Havasu for 14 years. Carl retired from Peterbilt Trucks in Pico Riveria, CA in 1996. He served in the US Air Force and was an active member in the Eagles #4299. He held the role of Chaplain from 2001 to 2010, writing his own prayers and speeches for special events and Celebrations of Life. Carl was then honored to hold the position of Vice President from 2010 to 2011.

Carl leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary Ann; children Annette (Joe) Surants of St Clair Shores, MI; Carleen Spidell of Nebraska City, NE; Mike Frakes of Nebraska City, NE; Renee (Thomas) Potter of Lincoln, NE; stepchildren Kenneth (Rosie) Gray of Standish, ME; Judy (Jack) Fraser of Rock Hill, SC; Charles Gray of Monrovia, CA; David (Jean) Gray of Hollis, ME; brothers Tom (Susan) Dillman of Clearwater, FL; Roger (Judy) Frakes of Omaha, NE; Bill Frakes of Omaha, NE; stepmother Helen Frakes of Omaha, NE; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; other family and friends.

Age 74, of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011 at her home.

Mary was born on March 14, 1937 in Gary, Indiana; the daughter of Peter and Wanda (Heater) Zafiropouslos.

Mary worked for some 37 years as a Honey Comb Welder for Tri-Industries in Terra Haute, IN before retiring.

She is survived by her children Mary K. Thummel and husband Brad Thummel of Nebr. City, NE; Barbara Kriley and husband Gary of Kimballton, IA and Tim Shepherd and wife Tanna of Dugger, IN; three grandchildren: Marcellus Kriley of Council Bluffs, IA; Mary Kriley of Davenport, IA and Karrie Mead of Nebr. City, NE; one great-grandchild: Micah Kriley of Council Bluff, IA; brother Fred Hall of Thayer, IN; three sisters: Youdeah Petruccione of Nebr. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jean (Nuss) Griepenstroh

Age 69 of Nebraska City passed away at her home Saturday morning; December 3, 2011.

She was born Norma Jean Sidel on January 29, 1942 at Percival, IA; the daughter of John F. and Litta L. (Lundy) Sidel. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Eugene Nuss in 1960 in Maryville, MO.

The couple moved to Nebraska City in 1969 to manage the former Town and Country Store on south 11th Street in Nebraska City. On March 3, 1976 at a very young age, her husband Lawrence passed away.

She later married Warren Griepenstroh in 1977. He also preceded her in death.

Jean was an avid cook and baker and owned and operated Jean's Desserts in Nebraska City for many years. She was very well known for her delicious pies and she supplied pies to the orchards during numerous Applejack seasons. She enjoyed golf - winning many tournaments with ladies teams, gardening - especially her roses, cross stitching, sewing, crafting, dolls and knitting. Christmas was her favorite holiday as she welcomed many into her home to share her handmade decorations and trimming. She also enjoyed watching football and golf events and was an active pool player and card player. She was very fond of her bulldog Mugsy, but spending time with her family was her greatest love. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her two sons: Larry Nuss and wife Carol of Gladstone, MO and Jerry Nuss and wife Vickie of Nebraska City; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a brother Marvin Sidel of Richland, NE.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three infant daughters and her dear and special friend Ralph Klein.

Funeral Services for Jean Griepenstroh will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery at Aurora, NE on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Gude Mortuary.
