Sammy J. Stephens, age 70 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.
Sammy Joe Stephens was born on January 24, 1954 in Hamburg, IA; the son of Sam Vincent and Audry Mae (Light) Stephens. He grew up and attended school in Hamburg, graduating from the Hamburg High School with the Class of 1972. After high school Sammy entered the United States Army and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on March 21, 1979. While serving he was part of the Horse Platoon. In the years following his service, the Horse Platoon would have reunions that Sam always enjoyed attending.
On January 7, 1974, he was united in marriage to Donna Donaldson in Sidney, IA.
After returning home from military service, Sammy worked at various jobs including Service Manager at the Chevrolet Store, Manager of the golf shop at Harrisonville, MO and he also worked as a truck driver and auctioneer. He loved the Kansas City Chiefs and the Missouri Tigers.
He is survived by significant other Nancy Stephens; children: Toni Bruce of Hamburg, IA, Tanya Chesnut (Kevin Andrews) of Leon, IA, Cody Stephens (Erica) of Hamburg, IA and Tara Stephens of Arkansas; 11 grandchildren: Robby, Koby, Payton, Treyton, Maci, Evan, Willa, Lane, Walker, Cooper and Case; two great-grandchildren: Stetson and Camryn; brother-in-law George Summers of Denver, CO, nephew Willie Holmes of Rock Port, MO; other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Joby Stephens, Wanda Kay Holmes, Sandra Summers, Butch Stephens and Spike Stephens; and nephew Jeff Holmes.
Visitation with family will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday (4/18) at Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg. Military Honors will be conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post.
Memorials may be given to the family for future designation.
