Duane Ralph Winkler was born July 23, 1944 to Oren Carl Winkler and Dorothy Faye (Risdon) Winkler on the Winkler family farm four miles east of Hamburg, IA.  He passed away April 9, 2017 in Knoxville, TN.

Duane graduated 8th grade from rural Highland Country School and high school from Hamburg Community Schools in 1962.  He enjoyed the farm life and operated a hay baler to earn enough money to put him through Iowa State University where he was awarded a Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Mathematics in 1966.

In June of 1966, Duane moved to Oak Ridge, TN where he began work as a Computer Programmer; a job he dearly loved.  He worked there until retirement in April, 1997 except for two assignments.  Duane spent 1973 and 1974 in Vienna, Austria, working at The International Atomic Energy Agency.  In 1991, he was assigned to the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.

After retirement in April, 1997, Duane did volunteer work for the Town of Farragut.  He also raised peonies and would make an annual trip back to Iowa to decorate graves.

Preceding Duane in death were his parents and two sisters:  Clarice Ann Winkler Head and infant Beverly Faye Winkler.  Survivors include his brothers:  George Winkler and wife Janeth of Henderson, NV, Charles Winkler and wife Sue of Hamburg, IA, brother in law Daniel Head and wife Betty of Holiday Island, Arkansas and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday; April 15, 2017 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Tom Beutler officiating.  Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery across the road from the family farm ending life’s journey just a quarter mile from where it started.

The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday (4/14) at Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg Vol. Fire Dept. or Hamburg Rescue.

The sudden loss of my dear friend saddens me. The world will be a darker place for his loss.

So sorry to hear of Duane's passing. Worked with Duane at ORNL's Math Division back in the late 60's early 70's. He was a close friend - the best man at my wedding. Over the years we traveled different paths but always remembered his kindness, competence, loyalty to friends. He was a good man. Condolences to his family.

Went to high school with Duane at Hamburg. He seemed a bit quiet and shy, but was very smart. So glad I got to talk to him at our class reunion in 2012. My sympathy to his family.

Duane was a good friend of ours for many years, Jack first knew him from work and then as a friend who lived nearby. We always enjoyed having him over for dinner, loved hearing his stories about family and life in Iowa, also a little politics once in awhile. We will miss him.
