Marvin E. “Zip” Zimmerman, age 88 of Nebraska City, NE passed away early Thursday, January 25, 2018 at his home.
Marvin Eugene Zimmerman was born on September 8, 1929 in Rulo, NE; the son of Dewey E. and Leah E. (Ely) Zimmerman. His family later moved to Nebraska City, where he graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1948. He was a great track star in high school, setting the record in the mile in 1947, a record he held for many, many years. Marvin received a track scholarship from Wayne State College where he was on the track team and studied engineering for a year and a half.
He was united in marriage to Lorene Anna Pieper in 1948 in Nebraska City. Marvin worked for the Nebraska City Utilities for some 26 years before retiring. After retirement, he worked as a substitute rural mail carrier for 21 years. He also worked part time at Mercers Hardware.
Marvin served in the Nebraska National Guard for many years. He was a member of the Nebraska City Eagles and the American Legion. He also belonged to the Nebraska City Saddle Club and had a deep love of horses.
He is survived by his wife Lorene Zimmerman of Nebr. City; children: Marvin “Butch” Zimmerman and wife Jane of West Point, NE, Dan Zimmerman of Nebr. City and Vickie Rhoades and husband Randy of Nebr. City; three grandchildren: Stacy Landreth, Tiffany Barton and Chadd Rhoades; 7 great-grandchildren, 3 great- great grandchildren and another due in March of 2018; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, brother Virgil Zimmerman and sister Lila Schafer.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday (1/29) evening at the mortuary.
